Hey guys, I get where you're coming from but it's way more complicated than you may think. It's easy to say simply start a new store or start a new section on Jockstrap Central of dad bods but you're assuming a LOT of things. Ultimately it comes down to cost, time and practicality.
First and foremost: This topic is one of the many reasons we started Your Jockstraps, so guys of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds can share and explore our shared interest - jockstraps. This is a companion site to Jockstrap Central for our customers, fans and yes, even guys who don't frequent our store.
I'd also like to point out that I'm pretty sure our roster of models over the past 16 years is far more diverse than any other underwear store. Most stores don't even bother to shoot their own catalog photography (let alone, take a sexier and more explicit approach to it) and the ones that do, use cookie cutter GQ models or cookie cutter muscled burly gym gods. Most of our models are not career models, they're just regular guys with an exhibitionist streak in them and wanted to model for us for the fun, the experience and to show off (and make some money and go home with some new jocks and gear).
There are many factors involved in how we choose our models but the most important one is simply: we can only hire who applies for the job. We find our models through word of month, referrals, some from model networking sites. Before Covid, we also placed ads in classified sites like Kijiji and did casting calls. A few models have come from our model callout from the Jockstrap Central website and once in a while, we'll see a hot guy on the street, pull over in our car and hand them a business card. Once, a customer of ours flew to Toronto from Germany on his own dime just to do a shoot.
The guys who are generally actively seeking modeling work don't tend to be older guys (with dad bods) as they tend to be more settled with careers and even families and appearing naked on a adult underwear store with faces showing isn't something that works for where they are in their lives. These guys (with dad bods) also have to be an exhibitionist, be outgoing and definitely confident in themselves as shy and reserved doesn't normally come across well in a shoot.
Adding to the above: there's a reason that 90% of the guys on Your Jockstraps who actually do post photos don't post photos with their faces showing.
The main criteria for modeling for us is that the models have to live in or around Toronto. We're not a brand like Andrew Christian, Calvin Klein, C-IN2 or even Cellblock 13 and can't afford to fly models in and cover their lodging. Luckily, we're in a big city and have access to a lot of great guys.
Although it may not seem like it, we only do between 12 and 20 shoots a year. We'll often shoot a new model a few times during that period. That means you'll be seeing the same few models over and over during a period of time. Because of this, we're constantly receiving emails from black guys wondering why we don't have more black guys and Asian guys wondering why there aren't more Asian guys on the site. Muscle guys wondering why we don't have more muscle guys, etc.. We tell them if they know some black, Asian, muscle guys in Toronto who are willing to model and go full-frontal then send them our way. So, likewise, if any of you out there know any good looking older guys with dad bods who live in Toronto then send them our way - and there's a chance we may shoot them (but there's also a chance we won't).
We've had lots of hot guys inquire about models have been older and verging on a "dad bod" that we would have certainly shot but they have all been from other parts of the world. We've told them to make their way to Toronto and if the stars align (as in, we have new product needing to be shot) we can try to make a shoot happen. We don't shoot guys for the hell of it but only when we have new products arriving.
Another major factor that determines who we choose for a shoot is simply based on what new products we have that need to be shot. We try to match a models look with what we're shooting but most importantly, size is often a major factor. We often have only samples of new products sent to us and often only size medium to bring to a shoot so we can't very well bring in a guy with a 36 inch waist. Breaking the shoot in two would cost too much money and eat into the already slim profits. We are a retail store and not a manufacturer.
Each shoot last four hours and we have to get through as many products as possible because photo shoots are expensive and time-consuming by the time you pay the model, pay for studio time then have to edit, color correct, crop and tag all the photos we use for each product page.
(There's a reason most underwear stores are happy to use the mostly headless, non-sexual photos that the manufacturers supply.)
Ultimately, we hire guys that Adrian and I like. There's not one model we've used that wasn't to our tastes (well, maybe one but that's another conversation). Sometimes I feel unique compared to other guys in how varied my taste is in men. I find so many guy pigeonhole themselves (i.e... "I only like older guys", "I only like young guys", "I only like uncut/cut guys", "I only like hairy guys", "I only like little guys", I only like Black guys, "big burly muscles guys", "I don't like Asians", "fems", etc...)
We don't set out to only hire any "type". Fate plays a bigger part, much more than intent

Something many of you don't know but Jockstrap Central is a VERY small business. It's just me and my husband Adrian. We encounter so many people who think we're a large company like International Jock, Andrew Christian, AussieBum... but we're not. We work almost 7 days a week to keep Jockstrap Central going. I'm sure there's lots of guys who wonder why the Jockstrap Central website hasn't had a upgrade in almost 6 years. It's not mobile friendly, there's no search function and the customer back end is non-existent. I've been trying to upgrade it for the past 5 years and haven't had the time. I built the Jockstrap Central website from scratch back in the day, both front and programmed the e-commerce part of it. To build a new site would mean that I would have to take a month off to catch up on technology/programming and so much more. The good news is I have found a solution and am now working on Jockstrap Central 2.0 and expect to have it launched within a few months. It's going to be slick and modern and mobile friendly and have search capabilities. It will also have wish list, saved carts and so much more.
So, in a perfect world, sure it would be fun to create a second store called dadbodjock.com (great name,
@RadJock ) but it would double my work load. I own underwearcentral.com and thongcentral.com but due to a lack of time, I doubt those stores will ever see the light of day.
Ultimately, we started Jockstrap Central back in 2005 and we're very proud of what we've accomplished. We're not a typical store. Despite being penalized by Google for being adult our decision to show our models in jocks and gear the way they were designed was the right one. We've survived recessions, changes in technology, changes in the way traffic is generated (traffic from websites and blogs versus most traffic coming from prudish social media) and now Covid - so I think we're doing ok.
Are we perfect, no. But I promise you try our best.
Finally: we take all constructive feedback to heart. We can't always act upon everything but we are listening and perhaps it will influence the future paths we take.

I know the above is a lot of rambling on but I really do need to get on with my work. I know there's similar topics that have been brought up in other forum threads. I'm not going to repeat myself by reply everywhere.
Cheers,
John.
