Website Issues (again)

On Friday, the SSL security certificate for this website expired. I wasn't paying attention and didn't catch it. My server hosting company set it up (along with ones for my other websites) some time ago and I was under the impression that they would auto-renew. I was wrong.

So on Friday, like many of you, when I tried to visit the website on Chrome it wouldn't load with a generic "can't connect" error message. So, right away I though "Fuck!" the issue with the hackers is back. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. It took a while to figure out it was the security ticket that was the issue. Chrome and Edge were giving the same generic error message but Firefox had a message about the site not being secure so I was able to figure it out from that hint.

Most modern browsers won't load websites that are not secure (which is a good thing)

Anyway, the new security ticket is installed and the site seems to be working fine again.

We have a pool in our company. The team guesses the number of our counterparty websites whose certificates will expire, rendering them inaccessible (until our counterparty pulls its head out and gets it done). Most of those websites are “mission critical” sites belonging to the Federal Government. And so far this year we’ve hit a new high of 254 so far. If you’re keeping count, my fellow Americans, that’s our tax dollars at work!

amateur hour suggestion, but you may want to consider Let's Encrypt /certbot. I've had an easy time with it, it's set to autorenew and has been fine for years. If you don't have access to the underlying stack beneath the CMS then no, it has an apache tie-in or presumably other options.

Thank you for the info. Most of my domains are using AutoSSL which is free, autorenews and comes with Cpanel which makes it easy. For some reason, yourjockstraps.com was using a different certificate. It's now been changed to AutoSSL so I shouldn't have to worry about it anymore.

Did the same thing happen with USG? I started getting a “your connection is not safe” warning when I visit it
