Our local Y had open showers but installed private changing stalls with showers after they remodeled the lockerroom. I suppose I'm on the older side now, ALL the showers were open growing up. The public pool, the Y, private gyms, junior highs and high schools, public and private schools. The colleges where I went to sports camps in the summer. The summer camps that some of my friends attended. Sooner or later, nudity in the presence of others happened to all of us. I didn't see partitioned and curtained shower stalls until I got to college, and that was only some of the dorms.

That my current gym chain long ago remodeled into stalls with doors is disappointing. It's nice to go for a run at one of the junior colleges which haven't done that.

My daily lecture as a former PE teacher. In the era when PE programs were mandatory and provided participants a good sweaty workout, in larger schools shower facilities
had to of adequate size to shower down perhaps 100 or more students in approximately 3 minutes allotted. The 5 nozzle pole showers along with multi head wall shower fixtures performed the task, but ideally the shower room needed one shower head for each student so you guys can do the math.

The image with the windows was a a required calisthenics class for freshmen at Missouri University. I do not know the design or size of the locker room shower facilities at MU or for the two other exercise groups shown but I would wager they were group showers, likely pole showers rather than cubicles with shower curtains.

Some of you may remember the "tunnel" showers shown in the first two images. While far less common than the open showers, they were found in some military, swimming pool and school PE locker rooms. The simple straddle pipe design on the left was more common, but the fancy Bradley tunnel shower fixture was used for many years in the Yale University locker room. Add a chemical foot bath at the end and the class was ready "and attired" for swim class! I suspect the "undercarriage" sprays could have presented a problem for the shorter students, especially if he shower line slowed or stopped when they were astraddle. As I recall the sales literature promoting the tunnel shower systems indicated they were fast, thorough, provided an efficient method to record shower roll call and prevented UNDESIRABLE BEHAVIOR often found in other shower systems.

My curious mind made me wonder what they meant by undesirable behavior.
