Jockstraps within Gym Shorts

Back when I was in high school (1972-76), one of the upperclassmen showed me his new gym trunks. The trunks that he showed me already had the jockstrap sewn into the gym shorts, so when you changed in or out of the shorts for PE class you only had to change into or remove one item. I went to a couple of sporting goods stores to see if I could find a combination shorts/athletic supporter, but wasn't able to find any. The upperclassman's gym trunks were red; the school colors are red and white and we were required to have red gym shorts,

Gentlemen, have you were owned or seen gym trunks with the jockstraps already sewn into the shorts? Just wonderin'

Don’t know what was available at that time, but Bauer makes these for hockey.

The Yale supporter/shorts were marketed in the late 60's and early 70's. I think they were more commonly found in junior high schools
and elementary schools which had student change for gym class. The advantage was that no boy "forgot" his jock, nor did they mysteriously disappear. It also eliminated the need to perform "jock checks".

The first disadvantage was price. In that era both jockstraps and gym shorts retailed for about a buck each. As I recall, the supporter shorts
were priced starting about $3.50. The second disadvantage was that in the haste of suiting up for class in the limited time allotted it was very difficult to don the garment without a foot capturing and breaking a leg strap. Accordingly, they didn't last too long and were expensive to replace.

I probably have a school supply list or a store advertisement listing the supporter shorts as part of the regulation PE uniform, and if I can fine either, I'll share it in this thread.

Here is an advertisement for PE uniforms in a 1976 newspaper. Note that the gym shorts have a built in jock, but $4.50 seemed like a lot of money
even in that era. I think this was a Missouri school district. The ad indicates the shorts are for Intermediate, Junior High and High School PE classes.
I am not sure what grades were classified as intermediate, but in Illinois we had some schools classified as Upper Elementary (4th, 5th and 6th grades) which required jocks in PE classes. I may have a supply list from one of those schools either recommending or requiring built-in jocks and if I can find it I will share. In my sales career, I don't recall ever filling an order for the supporter/shorts to either a school or retailer but I am sure my supply house had them available.

They come up on EBAY periodically but I have not seen them in a long time.

American Jock sold gym shorts with a built-in jock a few years ago, I bought 2: olive green with yellow piping and black with orange piping. I highly recommend them if you can find them. I think I bought them here at JSC.
