Jockstraps required for Physical Education Class.....a forgotten era

A couple thoughts on this one (and keep in mind this is from someone who missed out on this in PE class)...

It's interesting seeing how early jocks were required in some schools, but it may not have been impossible when you consider youth sizes. I think the typical youth regular/medium was for 20-26" waist, with large running 26-32", or at least versions of that. Looking around ebay, it seems like Bike even made a Youth Small in the 1990's (guess at the date) - it shows this as 14-20" waist, which is TINY!

It's also wild to hear that cups were even required in PE, although there were certainly days where they would come in handy depending on the sport being played!

I would also add, in looking around online, seems like there are at least some hits still of schools which require or recently required jocks for the boys in PE. Interestingly enough some of the same webpages sometimes also require or recommend sports bras for the girls - honestly these two seem like they'd go hand in hand. I would guess the sports bra requirement is on the rise, while jocks are (and have been) on the fall.

SMALLER POUCHES Especially for youth.

In my town they required jockstraps for PE in 7th grade, because a few guys were starting puberty. Many of us chose to wear them earlier. We couldn't wait to be like the big guys. We never thought that our small pre-puberty stuff disqualified us. We were "superman" in our hearts.

In our little town the only store that sold gym clothes had BIKES in all the adult sizes. So the smallest we could get was ADULT SMALL. This was really stupid because the pouches were ample for the most hung adult and us boys were swimming in the pouches. I tried real hard to snug them up. In hindsight I am puzzled that the store owner never offered us kids the YOUTH sizes, and the school coaches who saw the discrepancy never said anything.

When I was 14 and my nuts got big I was in Jr High. One guy with the locker next to mine was the only guy in the school to have a YOUTH MODEL. His dad took him to another town to get it. I memorized his locker number and "borrowed" it one day. I was in heaven wearing a jock that actually cradled my nuts. I wore it to bed and had two wet dreams. I returned it to his locker before gym class. At that age I didn't think anything about the loads I shot in it, but I am sorry about that now. That wasn't nice.

It seems unfair that so much attention is paid to girls to get them bra sizes that fit them individually, and they even have "training bras" for those who haven't "bloomed" yet. While all boys are expected to wear ADULT MEN'S pouches that didn't really help us any. Once a guy reaches puberty, whether his cock and balls are small or larger, no one wants then dangling during competitive sports. We all need support. Why can't jocks have pouch sizes too? They could label the pouches "snug" or "roomy".

Before BIKE stopped making jocks, they made a wide waist band model for TEENS LARGE that came with a large enough waist band that I could just get it on. I loved the smaller TEENS pouch. It gave me great support. If you look at my avatar photo you will see that I am NOT in the small range, and yet a snug pouch was just right for me, as long as I wasn't hard. (Getting a boner in any jock is painful for me.)

So, I think that pouches are too big especially for boys and teenagers who need their own sizes.

I attached a photo of a jock with the snuggest pouch I ever found. It lifted my balls up front and grouped everything together real good. It feels fantastic. Unfortulately when I tried buy another they had discontinued them.

Totally agree. I would have to assume the bike youth size ones (like the ebay link I included) would be a smaller pouch. In fact I think the last generation of Bike jocks had boys and teen models, in regular supporters (not just cups).

My first regular supporter was an Adams, in a youth large. It was VERY tight in the pouch and waistband, so I would have to think that certainly wasn't the same as the adult ones! Admittedly I was probably a little bit on the upper end of that size, but even for a smaller kid it would have been firm.

But you're absolutely right, even mens jocks vary so much in the pouch, you really should have "cup" sizes for the regular jocks, so a guy can get decent support. Or if not strictly size, sometimes you want a good tight one for running and high impact, maybe something a little more relaxed for other gym activities.

I remember one of my teammates having a Youth Bike size Regular jockstrap. It was so small! It looks like it was the 20-26" waist but that is tiny. I wonder if the ad you shared was a mistake. A 14"-20" waistband? Man thats a small person!

I'm trying to find if there's a picture of the measurements on the label, or another picture somewhere. I can almost swear I've seen this size before, although it's pretty rare. Maybe for the youngest boys though, this would actually be a good fit. It's not doing any good if it's all loose!

That was someone else who reported that small youth jock. I made a correction on my story. The jock I liked was a TEEN LARGE. The waist band was too tight, but I liked the snug pouch even though my package is a little larger than many men.

I believe I have a Bike Youth XS in my stash. I will see if I can get a picture of it with a ruler. Well it turned out to be a Sears but I think we will run it by @CoachBob because I think it was made by BIKE.

I love your story, especially at the end! Seeing athletic supporters listed before NIV Bibles must have brought some discomfort for certain religious types! 😱 To think that boys would take their jocks home and beat off wearing them! I wish!

I went to a religious high school and lived in the boy's dorm. Our room doors had to be cracked open at all times and the dorm master's wife would walk through the halls checking to make sure no one was beating off. So, I was imprisoned with those kind of sexually paranoid people and I had aching blue balls for the last 2 years of high school. 😫 There are some churches that teach that the devil makes you want to sin (beat off), and you can go to hell for it. This teaching has really messed-up a lot of guys. It is child abuse.

You appear to have followed your natural instinct, Nature's intended effects of testosterone. So, I really envied your story, packing on 13 jocks! 💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦

I'm making up for my oppression now!!! 🤩
The Headmaster's WIFE did room inspection??? How do you suppose she got roped into that. Besides, how on earth did she think she'd be preventing guys from beating off? We always found a way.
You're not saying that for two years of high school you never beat off, are you??
Yeah, the attitude from certain religious types toward jacking off has done incalculable harm. It's always a matter of those in power thinking their own particular shame should be the feeling of EVERYONE.

I have been told that the first sports bra was constructed by some clever woman who took two jockstraps and sewed them together to make a tight-fitting bra... and now look at the variety!. Well, I NEVER look at that variety! I have no interest in sports bras but a ton of interest in jocks.

No I never beat off until vacations and I left the dorm. I tried but it took too long for me and the chance of getting caught was to high. That fear made me very slow to cum today. Takes an hour. My wife did not like being pounded for an hour. It is hard for the brain to overcome fears. Not so easy.

I had one room mate who could cum in a minute, and I know that he was able to do it in bed at night. But he would not admit it because we would have thought him to be immoral.

Times have changed for most Americans. But there are still some Fundamentalist churches, and Mormons telling boys never to beeat off.

Hand in hand. Well, if you look at an athletic supporter as a nut bra, they could have said "nut bras for boys, budding bras for girls"

"How can we be sure that boys really WANT a jockstrap for PE, or that the girls WANT a sports bra? Just asking."

@CoachBob The route of "encouragement" that they'd want one as opposed to coming out and saying that it's a requirement. As if they would risk a health issue by not having one.

I'd be interested to see if the parochial school lists also mentioned athletic supporters. I never got to see my school requirements, but my mom didn't get me an athletic supporter for gym until like 10th grade. Yet, i tried to convey to her when I was in 8th grade that my balls were coming out of the leg holes of my gym shorts.

I'd also be interested to see any memos that may have gone home that mentioned that there would be jock inspections/checks etc.

I'm surprised that some mentioned athletic supporters for young grade school kids younger than 7th grade.

I just think it was wild to actually have wearing an athletic supporter as a requirement, especially the school that mandated white gym shorts, wondering how many kids did not wear white jocks under them.

The list(s) requiring cups is understandable, that they didn't want liability in case someone got hurt.

it's a good chat room subject, asking if anyone remembers their class supply list, or underwent jocks inspections, etc.

Wow, so you didn't shoot your load till you went home from school, huh? Sounds rough. I had a relationship with a guy who was like you; took him forever to cum, tho I loved working him over. He was skeptical that I could make him cum, but he experienced it with me like no one else.
I'm sorry the fear is/was attached to this most normal of human activities.
As for the fundie churches, Mormons, etc. they can fuck off; they'd done more harm than good in this area.

Sorry for delay as I have been off line for a while, but I offer an additional thought in response to inquires about jocks, cups and inspections by Strapped Wrangler and Opinionman.

I previously suggested that jocks were required in PE classes due to the focus on hygiene in the early development of male gender PE programs as they represented a standardized undergarment.

I don't offer this as a researched academic conclusion, but I don't think we should overlook the influence that military discipline and regimentation had on male PE programs. Certainly many PE programs focused on producing strong and well conditioned high school graduates who could readily meet the fitness requirements upon military entry. In several other respects, physical education programs had a lot of similarities to military, at least basic training.

It was very common for PE teachers to divide their classes into "squads" of perhaps 6 to 8 boys. Just like a platoon leader, "Squad leaders" often appointed from older students were responsible for attendance and perhaps uniform inspections of their charges. In some cases, the squads shared a small alcove in the locker room so the squad leader could observe that appropriate jocks were donned as the squad suited up for class. Similarly, at the end of the class the squads showered as a group, freeing the teacher of the task of taking shower attendance. It was also common for squads to assemble in the gym or on the athletic field, standing in platoon formation, while the squad leader, would announce roll call to the teacher in military style shouting something like "Squad 3 present and in proper uniform, sir". Often the squad leaders would face their platoon, leading the calisthenics.

Just like in the military, the squad system provided students for an introduction of group motivation/punishment. At the conclusion of inter squad competition such as touch football or softball, the losing squad might have been required to perform 20 push-ups or run an extra lap before heading toward the showers.

A regulation PE uniform was straight out of a "military playbook". The regulation would specify whether athletic shirts, sleeveless or regular tee shirts were to be worn. The color of the shirts, and gym shorts if not white were specified, and just like in the military all garments were typically required to be marked with the students name in a specified manner and location.

Finally, it was not unusual for PE teachers and PE Department heads to be ex-military. In several states, veterans were allowed to obtain a special certificate allowing them to teach PE, shop or drivers ed with absolutely no college. Needless to say, those of us who earned a 4-year PE teaching degree usually despised these guys whose only qualifications were that they pissed while standing up and presented their DD214 document for employment as a PE instructor. . Inevitably these guys taught their PE classes "by the letter" as if they were drill instructor wannabees. Some refused to allow colored stripe socks to be worn as the regulation PE uniform specified "white socks". Similarly, many of these guys considered jockstrap cups to be a uniform requirement rather than merely a piece of protective equipment so they insisted that cups we worn for all classes, whether it was a contact sport, a timed mile run on the track or merely a written quiz on ping-pong rules.

Perhaps the pendulum has swung too far with current co-ed PE programs, but I suggest the strict military protocol PE programs many of us experienced also failed to provide an educational framework for lifetime sport and fitness appreciation.

Thanks for reading another on my rants. Bob

The Sears jock is indeed a Bike #10. About 1960 vintage. It is an adult jock, not a youth model. The pouch size corresponded with the size of the waistband and the pouch on the extra-small adult jock was not much longer than the youth model.

Hi CoachBob - thanks for this essay. I also have no hard research, but I agree with your views on the military influences of high school gym classes. Two groups of men with professional interest in hygiene and the care of testicles were cowboys, and the military. Not much information on the former, moreso with the latter. I think that the Boy Scouts were another route of influence, especially in the 1950s and 1960s. Their connection to military style training seems clear. For decades Boys' Life regularly carried jockstrap ads, usually four times a year. And sometimes for more than one brand. When I was introduced to wearing a jock for 7th grade PE in 1965, the little information that I had was from those ads.

This is absolutely sensational! What a lot of work! You were a salesman of this stuff, so it's guys like you that worked for a supply company that provided me in 6th grade with the required school PE uniform and jockstrap. I remember clearly seeing the list of what was needed and boys were not required to have jockstraps until 7th grade, but I guess the company thought it wasn't a distinction worth making. At any rate, I'm super glad they included it. I was addicted the moment I saw it in my hand and then saw the older guys wearing theirs.
This was a new (to me) private, all-boys school and I recall asking my mother what an athletic supporter was as she drove me too school for orientation. "It's a kind of underwear that protects your penis," she said. I was silent, stunned that my mom had said "penis" in front of me. Of course, it just goest to show that women don't get jocks; they're to protect your balls more than your dick.
I swiped lots of jocks between 6th and 12th grade, for sure.
I love how these lists seems to carry just a touch of discomfort with the topic of jockstraps. It's funny that some of them labeled them as "supporter, athletic." What OTHER kind of supporter did they think people wanted?
I noticed, too, that some of the lists include cup jocks (one is specific: "Bike Athletic Supporter" was one item followed immediately bu "Bike Cup Unit." another school requires 6th graders to have an athletic supporter but 7th grader to have a hard cup. I wondered what sports they were doing that required that; hockey, I suppose, but I don't think football players wore cups. I don't think they ever did.
One list has "athletic supporter" followed IMMEDIATELY by the sentence; "NIV Bibles are available at the school bookstore." I love it. I wonder what the religious types in those schools would think if they knew how many boys took home their jockstraps and beat off wearing them. I certainly did. At one point, thanks to my thieving ways, I had about 13 jocks, and sometimes I'd pull them all one, one after another and once they were in place, I'd kinda smack the pouch to see hot much protection they added. that many was like having a CUP!
I suspect that the phrase, "supporter, athletic" comes from the jockstraps made for the U.S. military. There were half a dozen companies that manufactured jocks for the military during WWII, and as I recall, all of them labeled their boxes this way.

By the way, the term "jockstrap" was used routinely from the late 19th century up until about 1930. You could find that word on packages, in magazines, and in one case, in a specifically religious magazine. What changed was that in 1930 the Kendall Company bought both Bike Web Manufacturing, and Bauer & Black, and started a major publicity campaign. They exclusively used the term "athletic supporter" on their packaging and advertisements, and the term caught on. "Jockstrap" continued to be used by men themselves, and over time it became an unsavory word. It wasn't until about 1990 when Bike reclaimed the old term, and it became socially acceptable once again.
