Jockstraps required for Physical Education Class.....a forgotten era

With many schools starting this week, the trip to the stores to buy school supplies is an almost universal journey for students and parents alike. Not too many years ago, the school issued supply list would typically include pens, pencils, erasers, notebooks and for boys JOCKSTRAPS. Most of us recall getting our first jock for gym class about 7th or 8th grade, when the threshold of puberty was approaching. What is lost in memories is that in many schools, boys as young as 3rd and 4th grade (8 and 9 years old) found that gym class was now called physical education accompanied by mandatory group showers and the requirement to wear a regulation athletic supporter during class. Why? I really don't know as prepubescent male anatomy typically presented little to support. Regardless, as a manufacturer's representative, I made a living selling wholesale stuff including physical education uniforms, and in the course of fetching sales leads I accumulated many, many school supply lists describing PE uniform requirements, and with the pleasure of our website host I will post them in messages which will follow. As you peruse one, several or all of these lists keep in mind that each school likely had a hundred or more male PE students, and each student probably had a notable memory as he donned his first jock. Bob.

The Royal Valley Middle School list (Mayetta, Ks) simply lists "sports bra" or "jock strap". Unlike boys where athletic supporters were almost universal, it was very rare for supply lists to mention bras or undergarments for girls. I would wonder how parents explained to 4th grade girls the purpose of the jockstrap requirements for their male classmates.

I offer a couple of comments regarding my final two postings. How can we be sure that
boys really WANT a jockstrap for PE, or that the girls WANT a sports bra? Just asking.

Is there possibly some discrimination when specifying that girls can wear a sports bra IF NEEDED, but that boys MUST
wear a supporter and cup. Makes you wonder if the uniform requirements were created by a female school administrator.

If anyone actually perused this accumulation of jockstrap trivia, your comments please

one those said gym clothes laundered every other week, sounds like a ringworm recipe. Depends on how many days a week you have PE but still.
The most typical instruction was that PE clothes were to be taken home after Friday class, laundered then inspected for cleanliness during Monday roll call. Some PE teachers went to the effort of marking the uniforms with colored chalk on Friday to assure the garments were washed.

In reality, at many schools, PE uniforms were seldom laundered. Some boys would go the entire semester or longer without taking their gym clothes home for washing. Schools in that era were not air conditioned, locker rooms were often in a basement area and in winter windows were kept closed.

For years I made sales calls to coaches offices which were located in or adjacent to the locker rooms, and the scent was so strong that a blind person would not have needed braille guidance to find the locker room. If any of the PE teachers also taught health classes, they must have skipped over the chapter on hygiene. Notwithstanding jock itch and perhaps ringworm, I am sure the jockstraps were even more gross than the sweat stained tee-shirts.

On the other extreme, I called on several schools which provided a freshly laundered PE uniform to each student for each class. The boys only needed to provide their own gym shoes. At the start of each class they received clean shirts, shorts, socks and jocks and towels were also laundered daily. Those locker rooms did not require fire department breathing apparatus for entry.

Lived this by accident my senior year. We had an especially sweaty gym class before Christmas break and didn't realize I left my stuff in my locker for two weeks until we got back. The ammonia smell was horrible but had to endure it the first class of the new year. We had the reversible double thickness tee's and that was the worst! It would have qualified as a science experiment for Biology class.

I usually did the once a week washing, sometimes going to two weeks if I forgot to grab it from my locker on Friday.
Wasn't much of an issue during sports seasons, as I'd just shove my uniform in my duffle. But in off seasons, I had a hard time remembering.

Bob, thanks for providing all those lists! I share your interest in the history of jockstraps.

But here is what I long to know:

Every school in the USA from the east to west coasts, big city schools, or little country schools, all required jockstraps. This had to be organized nationally. Who made this requirement? How was it implemented in every school nationwide? And every boy from coast to coast remembers mandatory jockstrap inspections.

Some branch of the government had a lot of power. I wonder if a BIKE person was influential in the government decision. That's how things are today. Business owns the government.

For example, there was almost no circumcision until a Jewish doctor had a high position in the health department. Instantly, circumcision became almost mandatory in the military and recommended by all hospitals.

I bet there is a very interesting story (or key person) behind the requirement for jockstraps, besides it just being a great idea.
We may never find who the power person was in the government. But I bet there is some retired school principal or coach who can recall receiving instructions from the government to enforce jockstraps, and jock inspections in their school.

Can we find them?

This is absolutely sensational! What a lot of work! You were a salesman of this stuff, so it's guys like you that worked for a supply company that provided me in 6th grade with the required school PE uniform and jockstrap. I remember clearly seeing the list of what was needed and boys were not required to have jockstraps until 7th grade, but I guess the company thought it wasn't a distinction worth making. At any rate, I'm super glad they included it. I was addicted the moment I saw it in my hand and then saw the older guys wearing theirs.
This was a new (to me) private, all-boys school and I recall asking my mother what an athletic supporter was as she drove me too school for orientation. "It's a kind of underwear that protects your penis," she said. I was silent, stunned that my mom had said "penis" in front of me. Of course, it just goest to show that women don't get jocks; they're to protect your balls more than your dick.
I swiped lots of jocks between 6th and 12th grade, for sure.
I love how these lists seems to carry just a touch of discomfort with the topic of jockstraps. It's funny that some of them labeled them as "supporter, athletic." What OTHER kind of supporter did they think people wanted?
I noticed, too, that some of the lists include cup jocks (one is specific: "Bike Athletic Supporter" was one item followed immediately bu "Bike Cup Unit." another school requires 6th graders to have an athletic supporter but 7th grader to have a hard cup. I wondered what sports they were doing that required that; hockey, I suppose, but I don't think football players wore cups. I don't think they ever did.
One list has "athletic supporter" followed IMMEDIATELY by the sentence; "NIV Bibles are available at the school bookstore." I love it. I wonder what the religious types in those schools would think if they knew how many boys took home their jockstraps and beat off wearing them. I certainly did. At one point, thanks to my thieving ways, I had about 13 jocks, and sometimes I'd pull them all one, one after another and once they were in place, I'd kinda smack the pouch to see hot much protection they added. that many was like having a CUP!

I love your story, especially at the end! Seeing athletic supporters listed before NIV Bibles must have brought some discomfort for certain religious types! 😱 To think that boys would take their jocks home and beat off wearing them! I wish!

I went to a religious high school and lived in the boy's dorm. Our room doors had to be cracked open at all times and the dorm master's wife would walk through the halls checking to make sure no one was beating off. So, I was imprisoned with those kind of sexually paranoid people and I had aching blue balls for the last 2 years of high school. 😫 There are some churches that teach that the devil makes you want to sin (beat off), and you can go to hell for it. This teaching has really messed-up a lot of guys. It is child abuse.

You appear to have followed your natural instinct, Nature's intended effects of testosterone. So, I really envied your story, packing on 13 jocks! 💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦

I'm making up for my oppression now!!! 🤩

Strapped wrangler. Great question. I never really gave it much thought. I will offer the following hypotheses for you guys to pander.

First of all, jockstraps were never much of a profit center for the manufacturer, retailer or in my case institutional sales. For example if I sold say 30 dozen jocks to a school i might pocket $16 commission, but when I comped a dozen or so to the coaches and PE teachers, and put gasoline in the old Country Squire station wagon, there was "no meat on the bones" from the call. Of course if I sold football gear, possibly a gymnasium floor refinishing job, or a school year order of janitorial supplies, then the trip was worthwhile. BIKE brand included lots of athletic trainers supplies so they also needed to be sold to make a buck.

Physical Education was historically coupled to hygiene. After the depression when government funds were channeled towards school construction, gymnasiums with locker rooms were built throughout the country. The hygiene aspect brought the compulsory showers. Whether the locker rooms contained small lockers for storage, or used basket racks there was little room for overnight storage of students PE uniforms.
Briefs were not common, boxers offered no support and a union suit would not fit in either a small locker or basket. Hygiene again demanded a change of underwear for class, so with the advertising of athletic support, the small storage size requirement and the relatively low costs, the jockstrap just seemed to be the answer for a proper PE class garment,

It is possible that some State Physical Education program directive might have included jocks, but the final decision to require them was up to the school board and ultimately the individual PE teacher. That said, school administrators liked to produce and enforce curriculum guides and standards. It probably made little sense that the guides required 4th grade boys ( 9 year old) to wear jocks or 9th grade students to wear cups to every PE class. Regardless, these PE classes were frequently taught by new (probationary) teachers who felt compelled to enforce the school directive as written.

I remain of the opinion that the only person in government who really exercised the power to demand jockstraps to be worn was the friendly military basic training drill Sgt.

Bob,
Good information! I am still puzzled that so many guys from all over the nation report that wearing a jockstrap for PE was so essential that there were jock inspections, and a punishment (often running laps) for any guy who didn't have his jockstrap that day.

It would be fun to take a large survey on this site and ask how many guys had mandatory jocks at their schools. We would need to know that age of the guys, because this practice was dropped. Also, it would be interesting to know what state they lived in and if they were a rural, city or suburban school.

Personally, I went to 3 schools between ages 13- 17, in California and Missouri, and all had the exact same policies.

I think that in college in the 1960's they let you wear what you wanted for sports classes. I don't think I ever saw a guy who wore anything besides a jock. It was what everyone considered normal and essential. Guys would have been puzzled, but respectful, if they saw someone who didn't wear a jock.

I have see guys wear jockstraps and put whitie tighties over the jock. I have seen a guy wear a suspensory and a jockstrap over it. 🤪 I have seen guys wear a jockstrap over their boxer shorts. I saw a whole team of soccer players from Arabia put their jocks on over their soccer shorts, so all the spectators could see their jocks on the outside on the field. 😵 But I don't remember seeing anyone who didn't wear a jock somehow.

A couple thoughts on this one (and keep in mind this is from someone who missed out on this in PE class)...

It's interesting seeing how early jocks were required in some schools, but it may not have been impossible when you consider youth sizes. I think the typical youth regular/medium was for 20-26" waist, with large running 26-32", or at least versions of that. Looking around ebay, it seems like Bike even made a Youth Small in the 1990's (guess at the date) - it shows this as 14-20" waist, which is TINY!

It's also wild to hear that cups were even required in PE, although there were certainly days where they would come in handy depending on the sport being played!

I would also add, in looking around online, seems like there are at least some hits still of schools which require or recently required jocks for the boys in PE. Interestingly enough some of the same webpages sometimes also require or recommend sports bras for the girls - honestly these two seem like they'd go hand in hand. I would guess the sports bra requirement is on the rise, while jocks are (and have been) on the fall.

SMALLER POUCHES Especially for youth.

In my town they required jockstraps for PE in 7th grade, because a few guys were starting puberty. Many of us chose to wear them earlier. We couldn't wait to be like the big guys. We never thought that our small pre-puberty stuff disqualified us. We were "superman" in our hearts.

In our little town the only store that sold gym clothes had BIKES in all the adult sizes. So the smallest we could get was ADULT SMALL. This was really stupid because the pouches were ample for the most hung adult and us boys were swimming in the pouches. I tried real hard to snug them up. In hindsight I am puzzled that the store owner never offered us kids the YOUTH sizes, and the school coaches who saw the discrepancy never said anything.

When I was 14 and my nuts got big I was in Jr High. One guy with the locker next to mine was the only guy in the school to have a YOUTH MODEL. His dad took him to another town to get it. I memorized his locker number and "borrowed" it one day. I was in heaven wearing a jock that actually cradled my nuts. I wore it to bed and had two wet dreams. I returned it to his locker before gym class. At that age I didn't think anything about the loads I shot in it, but I am sorry about that now. That wasn't nice.

It seems unfair that so much attention is paid to girls to get them bra sizes that fit them individually, and they even have "training bras" for those who haven't "bloomed" yet. While all boys are expected to wear ADULT MEN'S pouches that didn't really help us any. Once a guy reaches puberty, whether his cock and balls are small or larger, no one wants then dangling during competitive sports. We all need support. Why can't jocks have pouch sizes too? They could label the pouches "snug" or "roomy".

Before BIKE stopped making jocks, they made a wide waist band model for TEENS LARGE that came with a large enough waist band that I could just get it on. I loved the smaller TEENS pouch. It gave me great support. If you look at my avatar photo you will see that I am NOT in the small range, and yet a snug pouch was just right for me, as long as I wasn't hard. (Getting a boner in any jock is painful for me.)

So, I think that pouches are too big especially for boys and teenagers who need their own sizes.

I attached a photo of a jock with the snuggest pouch I ever found. It lifted my balls up front and grouped everything together real good. It feels fantastic. Unfortulately when I tried buy another they had discontinued them.
