For some guys, wearing a jock was mandatory in PE. How did you PE teacher check if you were wearing a jock? We had to drop our shorts to show we were wearing a jock. For the unfortunate who we’re just wearing underwear, they had to finish off the class that day in just underwear.

The only time I've ever had a "jock check" was in little league once our coach mandated that we start wearing cups. I went to an all-guys high school in the midwest in the early/mid 2000's. By that time, jocks were becoming more rare most places, but not my high school. My high school was big on tradition, and generally as an incoming freshman, your best bet was to just watch what the older guys did and emulate them. Jocks weren't a "mandatory" part of our gym uniforms, but when we would go to buy our books and get supplies and stuff before the year started, there was always a big box of new jockstraps at the table where you got your gym kit. There were no "jock checks", but like some other guys have mentioned, we did pair up for situps and if you were holding a guy's feet, you could easily see his jock leg strap up his shorts.

One memory I have is of summer football practice before my freshman year. We had two-a-day practices, and most of the guys would head up to the weight room between practices to lift. Guys would just take their helmets and shoulder pads off, leave them outside the weight room, and lift in their practice gear. One day I was walking in the weight room with a few of my freshman teammates who I lifted with. We were walking past a group of four varsity players who were bench pressing. As I walked by, I overheard one of them say that he really wanted to try the new Under Armour jockstrap because it looked cool and more comfortable than the jock he had on (he grabbed the crotch of his football pants to indicate he was wearing a jock). The guys he was lifting with all agreed, and one said he was going to pick one up since the jock he had on was old and stank too much.
