I've periodically seen reference to / pics of truckers wearing jockstraps. The context was that this was somewhat typical. Anyone know if there's any truth to it? I've always wondered.

Has he ever explained why? I guess they might do some heavy lifting of loading/unloading stuff at the point of origin / at the destination, but what about all that time in between?

If you have ever ridden in a big truck or construction equipment you know that its a rough ride also climbing into the seat may require some big steps. A jock helps to keep you from sitting on your nuts and also keeps them safe and secure when you hit the big bumps. Its nice to go through the day without needing to adjust your junk.
When I started out as a driver at age 18, (intra-state) I wore Jockey low rise Y fronts for support. I wished I had the courage to wear a jock back then. On short hauls and 15-21 gear transmissions you were in motion all the time clutching and shifting. This was before air ride seats and your balls were bouncing around with the bumps in the road. On hot days you could actually land on them if you hit a big pothole. Between trips there was a lot of heavy labor unloading bagged materials (50,000 lb. cargo, 50 lbs at a time). I can see why some truckers jock up for a long haul. It might prevent aching balls after a long haul if the blood settles in your testicles. Thankfully, I got to move into the office after a few years.
