So i recently established new care with a new doctor. On the initial meeting, the front desk said they don’t do physicals on the first meeting but I still went to established a relationship with the doctor. I met the doctor and he said that he can do a physical that day anyway. I was instructed to undress to my underwear and no gown was given. I was wearing a jockstrap (which I usually wear) and so I undressed to my jock as the doctor ordered. To the doctor I mentioned that I would’ve worn something more modest if I had known I’d need to undress and the doctor said that he sees jocks all the time and that I can wear my shorts if I’m uncomfortable, but I declined. I went through the whole exam only in my jock. Do I continue wearing a jockstrap to the next physical? If I had known I was going to undress (which I did not), I’d wear briefs or something more modest and the doctor knows this since I made a mention that. Would it be weird if I wear a jockstrap to the next scheduled physical?

When he said he sees jockstraps all the time, I'd say that's enough permission to keep doing it. I have been wearing mine to the last 6 annual physicals. No reason to please someone else. It's you that needs to be comfortable.

Why would you change what you normally wear to go to a doctor’s exam? I don’t get it.

I’d leave the embarrassment at the door when you leave and wear what you want to wear.

Was thinking about this topic today because I have a dermatologist appointment today. I honestly don’t have the courage to wear a jockstrap when I know the routine is going to be strip to your underwear and put on this paper robe. Seems even more awkward since I usually see a female practitioner. Reality is the doctors and nurses have probably seen everything including men who go commando or wear jockstraps but I’m not there yet.

Too bad, perhaps you could lean into the embarrassed feelings you may be having. It might be liberating.

It seems you are uncomfortable wearing the jockstrap because it makes you feel too exposed. The question is not about what makes the doc comfortable but what makes you comfortable and I’m fairly certain you would not be posting this question if you were truly comfortable wearing it in the first place…that said, listen to your gut! 😁

My GP (doc) usually has a medical student with them. one time they asked if it was ok to instruct the student in doing a physical, which obviously i agreed to - always happy to help a med student. i just stripped off completely, as wearing a jockstrap was more likely to raise eyebrows. (yes, i'm a terible exhibitionist)

Wear the jock! The only way you will get totally comfortable in a jock is to wear one often, including at physicals.
