I contribute to other social media platforms on physical education topics which often jockstrap remembrances. Today, I had a discussion with a
participant on TUMBLR wherein he described having to wear a cup in 6th grade (age 11) school PE class. I am sharing the messages here. Perhaps
they will evoke memories from some of you gentlemen.........

To Freshman-K-28 Pardon my unfamiliarity with Tumblr. Apologies that I was to dumb to figure out how to respond to your private message account of your 6th grade PE class experiences. The topic of requiring boys to wear cups in physical education class brought about a lot of academic discussion when the practice was more common in the 1950′s and 1960′s. My personal familiarity with the practice involved high school age students, which was typically boys ages 14 thru 18, nearly all well into puberty. That is not to say that some school districts, schools or even individual PE teachers didn’t require cups in junior high PE programs. Your 6th grade (age 11) experience is the youngest I have heard so far. Your description of having to do calisthenics and running while wearing cups was not unusual. I had a long time friend who taught HS physical education classes for many years and required every student to wear a jock and cup during PE class track activities. Everyone who ever taught PE can probably remember less coordinated boys accidentally racking their “man parts” while running hurdles (low hurdles only in PE class) and cups offered both protection and enhanced self confidence. It was common practice to end the PE class with a mile run, and it was just accepted that some boys would have some chaffed thighs when they hit the showers. No big deal, it was just a chapter in growing up male! I have some PE supply lists and store advertisements indicating cups for PE class. If there is interest, I’ll post them. Bob"

6 grade P E
Still remember vividly my 6 h grade P E class , first year of having to strip for gym in a locker room with other boys , having to wear a jock strap with plastic cup , numbered gym uniform with reversible shirt and very short gym shorts , having to do running and other calistenics the whole period then at the end the mandatory shower time , hated the random jock strap inspections that happened weekly. Was 11 when i started 6 th grade junior high.https://coachbob.tumblr.com/
