Cups required in physical education classes

I contribute to other social media platforms on physical education topics which often jockstrap remembrances. Today, I had a discussion with a
participant on TUMBLR wherein he described having to wear a cup in 6th grade (age 11) school PE class. I am sharing the messages here. Perhaps
they will evoke memories from some of you gentlemen.........

6 grade P E

Still remember vividly my 6 h grade P E class , first year of having to strip for gym in a locker room with other boys , having to wear a jock strap with plastic cup , numbered gym uniform with reversible shirt and very short gym shorts , having to do running and other calistenics the whole period then at the end the mandatory shower time , hated the random jock strap inspections that happened weekly. Was 11 when i started 6 th grade junior high.

To Freshman-K-28 Pardon my unfamiliarity with Tumblr. Apologies that I was to dumb to figure out how to respond to your private message account of your 6th grade PE class experiences. The topic of requiring boys to wear cups in physical education class brought about a lot of academic discussion when the practice was more common in the 1950′s and 1960′s. My personal familiarity with the practice involved high school age students, which was typically boys ages 14 thru 18, nearly all well into puberty. That is not to say that some school districts, schools or even individual PE teachers didn’t require cups in junior high PE programs. Your 6th grade (age 11) experience is the youngest I have heard so far. Your description of having to do calisthenics and running while wearing cups was not unusual. I had a long time friend who taught HS physical education classes for many years and required every student to wear a jock and cup during PE class track activities. Everyone who ever taught PE can probably remember less coordinated boys accidentally racking their “man parts” while running hurdles (low hurdles only in PE class) and cups offered both protection and enhanced self confidence. It was common practice to end the PE class with a mile run, and it was just accepted that some boys would have some chaffed thighs when they hit the showers. No big deal, it was just a chapter in growing up male! I have some PE supply lists and store advertisements indicating cups for PE class. If there is interest, I’ll post them. Bob"

For me jockstraps for PE were recommended in 5th grade but required in 6th grade. Not an issue for me since I had jocks and cups due to playing little league. For PE cups were never required and even during dodge ball when a free through was tosses we were suggested to hold our hands below the waistline. In Middle school cups were strongly suggested for team sports such as soccer and football. Required for Baseball. HS was the same. No cups for PE but would be for sports.

Athletic supporters were required and furnished by my high school for mandatory Freshman PE. Gym shorts were issued along with it, also free of charge. No cup was supplied but one wasn't really needed. The time was September, 1968 and it was my first jockstrap, a cotton-blend Champion Atlas like the one depicted below. It was the beginning of a major jockstrap fetish which is still going strong to this day.

We had to wear jocks for PE. We only had to wear cups for football. It's funny how football players don't wear cups anymore. Back in the 70s and 80s it would have been unthinkable not to wear one and I don't recall a single guy not wearing a cup when we suited up. Indeed, I use to wear a cup for touch football practice in high school to protect against stray knees.

Ditto with my high school, Sept. 1957. For some reason, they gave me one with a really wide waistband, which I folded over.

Began wearing a cup for youth hockey from age nine. Still do, of course, as do all hockey players. Just pulled the Cup jock over our briefs. In high school and college most wore a regular jockstrap under long-johns or lightweight sports shorts (Champion "greys") with the Cup jock over that. Kept everything securely under the cup. Never saw anyone wear a cup jock on bare skin. Ugh! Today most wear the cup jock over compression shorts, though some also wear a regular jock under the compression shorts. (Ever have one of your nuts fall out from beneath a cup and then get hit on the cup? Yikes!)

For PE, from 7th grade we were strongly encouraged (notes sent home to parents, and lectures by PE coaches) to wear a regular jockstrap under our gym shorts (1970s), but not required or checked. However, all the football and basketball players automatically wore jocks in PE, so most everyone else followed suit. Besides it was easier just to change out of your street clothes into your jock and gym clothes (kept in your locker), then after PE shower and put your street clothes, including (dry) underwear, back on. On weekends you'd take your gym clothes home (for washing) in your gym bag, or, if you were really cool, in your "roll" (rolled up towel with your jock and gym clothes inside).

This is why you wear a jockstrap instead of putting a cup in sliding or compression shorts. If he takes one to the cup he will regret his decision to use compression shorts (if Dad or someone even told him)

A couple of you DM'd me asking about other jock and/or cup experiences. No, I don't recall anyone ever wearing a cup for PE, just a regular jock. A few guys wore cup jocks, without a cup, for PE — maybe their parents bought it not knowing the difference, or to save money they used the cup jock with a cup for other sports.

Speaking of which, I've read here that some of you wore cups for football. News to me — we all wore regular jocks, never cups for football (this was before compression shorts). Wrestlers wore regular jocks under their singlets. Basketball — just regular jocks. Baseball catchers and most pitchers wore cups, as did some 1B and other infielders. No outfielders wore cups that I ever saw. Lacrosse: goalies of course wore cups, most defense and some midfield, few if any attacks. As with hockey, lacrosse players who did wear cups often double jocked — wearing a regular jock under boxers or Champion "greys" with the cup jock over. Tennis players wore regular jocks or briefs, never cups that I saw.
