I've told people before that was was a garbage man so I wouldn't have to answer a million questions about cars. Lol
LOL My middle brother is a doctor and often tells people he’s a physical mechanic. I keep telling him it doesn’t throw people off the scent — he should just say engineer or something if he doesn’t want the discussion about bodily ailments.

Just an assistant manager in retail over here. Been with Levi’s for years now
As an assistant manager, do you get to be hands-on with the guys in the changing room, or are you just a mentor to your sales staff now? Gotta check that fit . . .

Ain’t it the truth. I am forever getting calls to fix this or that problem on neighbors computers.
Sadly I’m one of those guys. We have close friends who used to work for Apple and Microsoft, and I’m always asking them something (stupid) about my iPhone!

Ahh, qualifications. 😳 In my experience, they can expire a damn sight quicker than your life.
1) Ex Royal Navy marine engineer with a fistful of qualifications, including the authority to, ‘Take charge of one (steaming) Unit - i.e. Boiler Room and Engine Room - of a RN Warship, plus its ancillary equipment.’ That’s totally useless now because there are no steam powered ships left in the RN. My HNC engineering qualification that I gained at the end of a 4 year apprenticeship is now long out of date as well!
2) Ex Sales and Marketing Area Manager for a UK based international drinks company, with professional qualifications in man management. Again, not a lot of use as the company went bust in a big way, one year after I took redundancy, although not because of my man management techniques!
3) Ex English Literature secondary school teacher at an International boarding school. Yes, my degree is still relevant, although all of the additional ‘professional‘ qualifications probably account for nothing.
4) I’m now absolutely happy doing the square root of sweet FA, although I’ve just qualified as a ‘Skipper’ in a voluntary capacity, and am now licensed to take command of a fee paying inland boat with up to 12 passengers, plus crew. I ply my trade on one of the major canals in the UK as and when the fancy takes me. I’m also more than content with watching the scenery slide past at a very leisurely 3mph or 2.6 knots.
Hopefully, I’ll expire before this qualification will!
Can I come on your boat? My father's family were all big narrow boat people, in their time.

Started picking strawberries at 6 years old, hid carritfir bricklayer, dishwasher waiter in retirement home, delivery for florist all before college. I worked in a bookbindery at a Trappist Abbey Monastery for 5 summers and holidays while going to college.
Canary, men's clothing salesman. Teacher, shoe salesman, bartender, sewed 100# bags of hazelnuts closed, day care teacher, green chain in wood mill, day care director, retail salesman in feed store, paper mill for 25 miserable years. Salesman at Restoration Hardware, cold calling salesman (awful), call center for a hospital, housekeeper at a men's clothing optional resort, landscaper for a man that had thousands of roses (there were two of us at this job, outside everyday for 2 years in Palm Springs), homeless shelter for men, house case manager for homeless vets and last 19 years I was a housing case manager for homeless HIV people.
I may have missed a couple.
Retired 10 years ago at 63. Live on fixed income but happy to never work again!
I used to be a homelessness officer here in the UK. I'm curious, in the states is it standard for people with HIV to be housed separately from people without? Is that because of the risks involved in potential needle sharing? Or were there sadly just more HIV positive people in the homeless population (which can sadly be the case here).

I'm late to this but here we go:

I'm about to turn 30. I did my degree and masters in Medieval and Ancient History. Then I did my teaching qualifications. I moved to Japan for love (mistake sadly) and worked as a teacher for children with Downs Syndrome. Then I moved back to the UK and was a homelessness officer for two years. Now I am a bookseller and buyer. I work for a big chain of bookstores and I buy stock for nine shops along the south coast of England. A big part of my job is reading the most recent releases, and suprise, surprise I never knew there was so much terrible fiction getting published all the time. But I get loads of free books and work with great people. So, swings and roundabouts.

Quick story. When I was in first grade we had a class project where we built a 3D version of those little area rugs with cities on them and you put matchbox cars on. Spoiler alert…. I had said rug and had a case full of matchbox cars lol.
Anyways we built our little city and I brought in tons of cars to fill our city with and I was the most popular in class cuz of my matchbox collection… I’ll never forget my teachers words…. “You need to pay more attention to the important subjects because you’ll never get paid to play with cars when you grow up” I've never hated a teacher so much for such a simple sentence…..

Well I’m 30 now and have been in business full time on my own 10 years as a professional auto detailer! Bitch please I get paid every day to play with cars and I absolutely love it! I get to play with cars a lot of people never get to see up close in person and it’s freaking awesome!

I also have been teaching snowboarding during the winter months since I was 14 for my local ski resort, and the last 12 years I’ve been professionally certified.

I worked for a couple years right of high school as a barista for Starbucks. Worked a few restaurant jobs over the years. Long time family friends bought a marina on our lake and I worked that first summer they owned it as a dock hand sending out rental boats and running our launch ramp, which is why I got so good at maneuvering trucks and trailers and got damn good at maneuvering boats at docks.

I also have had several bartending gigs over the years but the most involved is working for my mom running an outdoor bar at an outdoor summer outdoor concert series that we have run the bar for almost 10 years now. I’m the kind of on the rocks shaken margaritas lol.
I come from a family of teachers and my husband is a university administrator. All of them would HATE what that teacher said to you. Those kind of remarks can have lasting negative consequences on a young mind. Think about it…despite your successes, you still remember that one moment from 1st grade.

Yeah but I think about in it as a hey look how cool it was for me to be able to do and help people with a lot of car rated things that makes their life a bit easier?! So it’s a good and helpful success not just monetarily.

Great story leaving me wanting to learn more. I'm in El Dorado Hills, CA. I'd love to stop in and enjoy the marina. I'd need help backing up my trailer though. HMU
