Got my PA in 2005 and there were metal detectors in places I never thought of due to 911. Went with the extended family to Chicago and decided to go up the Sears tower and we rounded the corner to the entrance and there was the 1st metal detector. I was scared shitless trying to think of what to do if it went off. I could only imagine them waving a wand over my crotch and having the thing go crazy. I was wearing an 8 gauge ring then and also had a heavy set of car keys in my pocket. After sweating it out, nothing happened, thankfully. I'm sure guys with heavier rings might have other stories to tell.

I’ve often wondered if body piercings set off detectors. A few months ago I had a chest X-ray. I was emptying my pockets, removing jewelry, when the tech asked is I had any other metal on my body. I’m not pierced but often wear a cock or glans ring. That day I had neither and told him I was clear. He said, these days you just need to ask. I agreed and asked, I bet you’ve seen it all haven’t you? He laughed when he said, I never imagined some of the things I’ve seen. You’d think if you’re being X-rays you’d know they’re going to show yet I still have people tell me they have no more metal anywhere then step up to the machine and they have piercings everywhere. Lol. I told him I wasn’t brave enough for piercings but I did occasionally wear a cock ring. He said me too, at least there’s no pain involved. We had a good laugh and he started snapping pics.

I’m sure they have other methods to remove them, but some may be destructive to the PA itself, thus the reason we decided I should bring him one.
