I was almost 14 when I received my first athletic supporter in 1968 from my high school for required freshman PE. It was an unbleached cotton-blend Champion Atlas. As PE was only required that first year, I later ended up sexually abusing that jockstrap until it disintegrated. In the late 90s or so, I found one like it on eBay and, once again, raunched it up good. I sold it on Naughtybids. Here's a pic of that jock taken back when with my first digital camera, a 3.2 mp Kodak EasyShare. (Reposted from 2022)

I don’t recall if I have responded to this thread already so I apologize if some of this is a duplicate. I think I was about 12 years old when I got my first jockstrap. It was back in the 70s when speedos were popular for young guys to wear at the pool and beach. My mother insisted that I wear a jockstrap under my speedo. I guess she didn’t like seeing the outline of my little boy dick. The jock was a Bike swimmer jock. I think it was a #59 and was made mostly of cotton and rubber. I loved having a jockstrap even if I caused boners when I put it on fairly frequently but I kind of disliked having to wear it under my speedo because the leg straps and waistband were always sneaking out. The time of wearing speedos probably only lasted a summer or two for me but of course I still had the jockstrap.

During my high school days jockstraps were the norm for certain sports like football basketball and baseball but for guys like me who ran cross country and track we generally didn’t wear them. That said I liked seeing all the other guys in the locker room in their jockstraps.

By the time I had graduated from college I had followed the trend and switched from tighty whities to boxers which had the side benefit of giving me a reason to buy a couple jockstraps for sporting activities and for much of my 20s and 30s jockstraps became my normal for anything from tennis and squash to pick up basketball or just a gym work out. Secretly I always enjoyed going to the gym after work and taking off my boxers and putting on a jock knowing that someone might notice it.

Kind of a long answer to a simple question but that’s my history and now I’m in my early 60s and still wearing my jocks under my jeans and my gym shorts. Once a jock guy always a jock guy I guess.

You and I are of an age. I wish one's memory wouldn't play tricks, but I have a vague image of being in 6th grade, at a new private boys school, and wearing a jockstrap under my speedo, as you describe. I THINK I wore it once and realized it was unnecessary. I can't recall if other boys wore a jock; I doubt it. I also don't know if I felt any embarrassment when I looked around and didn't see other dudes in jocks under speedos. I simply don't recall. very frustrating.
Sorry that you SUCK CUMMED...er, I mean succumbed :) to the "replace tighty whities with boxes craze." I managed to resist that, tho in college most guys still wore white briefs except some of the prep school guys, who wore boxers. One guy, who was a little dumpy and round, stripped off his pant in the locker room once and was wearing sky blue tight trunks or something like that--something NO ONE else would dream of wearing. He got a lot of flak about that.

Truer words . . .! I’m approaching 60 with terrifying velocity and am definitely still a jock guy. However, we only wore speedos at school for meets — none of us wore anything under our suits for the meets. For practice it was always butt naked — required for hygiene or some BS, but I, for one, wasn’t complaining. I remember wishing at the time that our surferdude swim coach should be naked, too. I was apparently in the minority, at least among the school officials, on that point. 😗

I'm just stunned every time I read about nude swimming at the Y or schools or wherever. Unfathomable, esp the part about it being "more hygienic".

Can you tell me more about this? People didn't think it was odd? What was the "hygiene" reason given? (I once read that the Y had nude swimming because the material from the swim suits detached little by little and clogged the drains. That can't really be true.... can it?)
What conversations did you have the first time you practiced nude swimming? I imagine some nervous laughter and jokes. I suppose after a while no one thought about it?

Apropos the comments about wearing a jock under a speedo, I never saw the point — though I admit to trying it in private to see what it looked like, both a regular 3" jock and a 1" swim jock. LOL, both looked ridiculous. Waistband was way above the speedo waistline (back and front), and no way to keep the leg straps from showing. Besides, the speedo provided plenty of support on its own. In fact, a number of hockey and soccer teammates wore speedos as base layers. Having said that, at the beginning of the summer I remember distinctly overhearing three older lifeguards at our swim club quietly discussing whether they should wear jocks under their red nylon speedos for the sake of modesty. They decided, no, not necessary. And I also distinctly recall a buff young gymnast who wore a 3" jock under his speedo at our swim club all summer. He must have had a thing for jocks, or his dad made him wear them, as he wore one under his tennis and sailing shorts, even when playing volleyball. And he was not the only one, except for under his speedo. No one else did that. This was in the early 70s when wearing speedos at the swim club and even the beach was normal.

I honestly never remember any flak about it at all. Some guy jokes (of young teenage nature) about how the meets would be more interesting if those were naked, too; how naked meets would maybe not be swimming but j/o and size competitions, that kind of stuff. I also don’t recall if when the girls’ pool time occurred, if they were naked, too. It really just was what it was. And the only reason given was that the swimsuits “held germs” and thus the pool was “safer” for us. Something along that line was on the sign posted on the basement pool. Now that I think of it, it must have applied during girls’ hours, because the sign didn’t specify for us only.

Never heard of HS girls swimming naked. If they did, must have been a female gym teacher, or a gay man.
