Ass straps as a jock-thong?

This morning a buddy and I are in the locker room getting ready for a lifting session. He pulled out a well worn 3" Bike jock and mumbles something like--this is on its last leg. He then take the ass straps and puts them both up his ass like a thong. I must have had an odd look on my face when he said that it makes the pouch tighter to hold everything in. So instead of the straps framing his ass, now they're half way up his ass.

Is this common? Am I in the dark about this? I've never seen this before.
