Protex Athletic Supporters
(1905 to present)COMPANY:
PTX (Canada)
HISTORY:
This one's got some pretty major jockstrap history attached to the Protex name.
We all know Bike created the first jockstrap but in 1927, a Canadian company is credited with creating the first hard cup supporter. Although the Guelph Elastic Hosiery company (in Guelph, Ontario, Canada) was founded by Joe Cartledge in 1907, it was one of his two sons, Jack who being a "jock" developed the hard cup supporter and filed a patent for it in 1927. That jock was sold under the name Protex. The owner of Guelph Elastic Hosiery died in 1957 and the company was sold the following year. Eventually the company ceased making anything but jockstraps and the company was renamed Protexion Products in 1987.
I'm not clear on the details, but sometime over the last two years, the company was either sold again, renamed or restructured and is now distributed by a comapny called PTX in Toronto, Canada.
