Always interesting to see evidence of a less self-conscious time when men could interact and play with one another in this relaxed way... Makes me feel jealous for those times.

I remember going to the Y on men swimming day. The ladies had the hour before us. We'd spend a half hour or so, men, 20 year olds and teens playing basketball, just shooting around. I enjoyed those games as nobody was self conscious, Watching all these guys of all ages let go of their inhibitions, going after the ball, rubbing up against one another. It seemed like the way it should be.

What an interesting clip. It's really great to see ordinary guys nickel up, men any of us could identify (and play) with. I'm left wondering (1) why is one guy wearing shorts and barefoot? (2) why are two stripped to jockstraps? Heat?

We started out in our gear (shorts etc) one night but ended up wearing nothing but our jockstraps because of the heat
It was supposed to be a friendly game but ended up deadly serious as we stripped down to our jockstraps

I've read an online article (at https://comebacktown.com/2022/10/04/you-wont-believe-what-went-on-at-downtown-ymca/) in which the writer says that men used to play handball wearing only jockstraps on the rooftop handball courts at the downtown YMCA in Birmingham, Alabama, but were forced to stop when taller buildings were built nearby, giving some women an unobstructed view. So I would guess that either this sequence was filmed at that particular YMCA or it was actually a common practice at various YMCAs in the early 20th century.

Considering that was a time when naked swimming was pretty much required at many if not most YMCAs across the country, wearing jockstraps for handball seems almost like a concession to modesty, although I'm sure it was actually essential athletic support for such a vigorous activity as handball. I for one would NEVER play handball (or, in my case, racquetball) unless I were wearing a jock. Otherwise I'd be aching very badly "down there" afterward.

Something seems off — for the time, men wore knee-length swimsuits with tank uppers and played sports in full pants. Then again, boys will be boys, and I’m not complaining! Given that the jockstrap as we know it was first patented 25 or 30 yrs before the supposed vintage of this film, it’s certainly possible — maybe this was the forerunner of Men Gone Wild? LOL I’ve always loved ballplay . . .

I could be wrong, but I think that's just a quick jump-cut to a completely different scene filmed at another place and time, like many others in that same video. I doubt they were watching the jockstrap handball games. But, again, I can't state that a fact, so I could be wrong.
