Jockstraps required for Physical Education Class.....a forgotten era

Detention P.E.? I would have gotten in a lot more trouble 🤣
Scott, I don't think you would have enjoyed detention PE all that much. In a bygone era class discipline issues were resolved by PE instructors in the locker room with a paddle by having the miscreant drape a retired vaulting horse for some "attitude correction". Something as simple as failure to wear a jock might have resulted in a a couple of swats. By the late 60's corporal punishment fell out of favor replaced by detention PE sessions.
Generally 10 or 15 minutes of calisthenics, followed in good weather with perhaps a mile run. Nothing really abusive, but not a pleasant way to end the school day for most. In schools where laundered PE uniforms were provided for each student, unless PE class was the last hour this meant yet another PE uniform and towel for the evening laundry detail.

Imagine leg lifts on and off for a whole hour. Would that change a kid's attitude? It would mine, hated them.

Full angle leg lifts, even the "V" sit as we know them today were not heavily emphasized in the 1960's era exercise routine.
What was more in vogue was the six inch leg lift. "Raise em, spread em, together, hold" After four or five repetitions, even a 20 second hold
could get really uncomfortable, but this was a great exercise for the abs and general torso muscles.

I've never heard of repeated cycles of leg lifts in either school PE or military physical training activities but I've read some stories that some
college fraternities used 6" leg lift, along with push-ups and deep knee bends as repeated exercises in their "pledge training" programs.
I saw a story in a blog describing fraternity hazing of actives actually using rulers to assure that pledges legs were held exactly 6" from the floor.

There was belief that these leg lifts put strain on the back, so it was common to immediately follow 6" leg lifts with prone back and forth straight
arm and leg extensions. That exercise was named "grandma's rocking chair" and typically hated by all participants. It probably goes without saying that when performed while wearing a cup, it was really important that everything be properly packaged or "ouch"

Anyone else remember the 6" leg lifts?

Oh I remember those dreadful (at the time) lifts. But . . . I credit this infernal things in middle and high school, in the Academy and in training for my abs, cut groin and Adonis belt being maintainable in my 50s.

I received my first athletic supporter, an unbleached cotton Champion Atlas, as a high school freshman in 1968. Oops, I mean freshperson. I actually obtained it from the school bookstore, so I probably had a list of required books and other supplies. In addition to the jockstrap, I was provided with gym shorts and socks. PE was only required that first year. After that, I used the jock for several years as a masturbatory accessory until it disintegrated from heavy abuse. Receiving that Champion jock was the start of a lifelong obsession for that unique and arousing item of male athletic under gear.

Looks like he military still uses 6" leg lifts as a physical training exercise. The BDU trousers and room design certainly looks
modern compared to what I recall during basic training in the later 60's. I am sure the extra weight of combat boots makes
the leg lifts even more enjoyable for the trainees.

Quiz time again guys. The attached advertisement for "surplus" school property was posted by the South Bend, In.
School District in 1983. What are your thoughts on the numbers. Why would the school have 200 swim trunks, 700 gym shorts
along with 1600 athletic supporters offered for sale? Who would have need for 1600 jockstraps? Do you suppose these were new
or already "experienced"?

1. Really good sports equipment salesman called on this school
2. Yearly standing order and the jocks piled up while kids converted to compression shorts or boxers
3. Equipment manager put too many zeros on the school order
4. someone ordered the wrong size shorts and jocks compared to the median school waistline
5. PE went co-ed at that time and students quit dressing out for class in the usual uniform

Thoughtful ideas indeed. Noting that the surplus school assets sale was in 1983 I am wondering if the school district was transitioning from school laundered PE uniforms to a (bring your own) policy. Several of the schools I sold to did so in the 1970's. Just a guess, but I wonder if
the school might have laundered PE uniforms on a weekly basis but provided each student two jockstraps at the Monday issuance. I also suggest the PE gear might have been previously worn as new inventory could have probably been traded back to the supplier for other athletic equipment.
The 200 boys swim trunks for sale would indicate that the PE classes no longer swam nude. Anyone with other thoughts?

That's interesting, that a school could issue you a jockstrap to wear that's been worn by at least one other person previously. What other garment would fall into such a category

When I was in school (the dark ages — late 70s/ early 80s) we picked-up PE clothes when we went in and left them in a dirty clothes bag when we went to shower. Shirt, trunks, jockstrap, socks — only thing that was our own was our sneakers. The exception was when you were on a team; then you had to buy your own uniforms and jockstraps and socks.

Quite common for schools to provide freshly laundered PE clothes to each student for every class. Probably less common for schools to require sports participants to provide their own gear. Most schools had large commercial washing machines called "extractors" which they used to wash towels daily so adding gym clothes to the wash load wasn't tht big of a deal. The only exception was that the recommended maximum wash (and dry) temperature for jocks was 110 f., so they should have been washed separately from the other PE clothes. A standard purchase specification for gym shorts and shirts was to have them labeled in large letters S, M and L. This made it easy to quickly sort laundered gear into laundry bins and all a student needed to do was walk by and pick up his correct size. Bike designated jockstrap size in their school packs by the number of colored stripes in the waistband. 1 stripe for small, 2 for medium and 3 for large. Champion had huge SML letters on the label of heir jocks, so again sorting the sizes of jocks into bins was a quick task.

We had the same HS gym procedure — pick up gym clothes (shirt, shorts, socks, jock) from the supply counter in the locker room. After class (and after showering with the supplied towel) toss them into two bins — one for towels and socks, and the other for shirts, shorts and jocks. Most of us wore medium shorts, shirts and jocks. Some wore large. I don't remember there being any small. I guess any small kids wore medium and had baggy gym clothes. Regardless, one year I remember that someone had the bright idea to mark one medium jock and one large jock with an "X" on the waistband, and it was always fun to tease whoever got those jocks each day while noting who had worn them the day before, LOL. Sometimes the "winner" would go back and try to exchange the jock for another, but the trainer wouldn't do it. Besides, whatever jock you got had been worn the day before by someone.

What an incredible difference to when I was in high school.
We bought our gym uniforms (white T-shirt, blue shorts or sweatpants), and were responsible for laundering it ourselves. Showering was optional, but no towels, soap, ECT was provided. Jockstraps were not only not required, but not even listed as a recommendation for boys.
Personally I would take my gym bag (one of those drawstring sacks) with my uniform, socks, jockstrap, towel, body wash (which doubled as shampoo), and deodorant (including axe body spray... I went to high school during that era) to gym class 2-4 days a week (depending on year) and id bring it home usually every other week to wash. The exception was with my jockstrap, towel, and body wash, which would get moved to my sports duffle each day at the end of school so id have it for practice.

"How can we be sure that boys really WANT a jockstrap for PE, or that the girls WANT a sports bra? Just asking."

@CoachBob The route of "encouragement" that they'd want one as opposed to coming out and saying that it's a requirement. As if they would risk a health issue by not having one.

I'd be interested to see if the parochial school lists also mentioned athletic supporters. I never got to see my school requirements, but my mom didn't get me an athletic supporter for gym until like 10th grade. Yet, i tried to convey to her when I was in 8th grade that my balls were coming out of the leg holes of my gym shorts.

I'd also be interested to see any memos that may have gone home that mentioned that there would be jock inspections/checks etc.

I'm surprised that some mentioned athletic supporters for young grade school kids younger than 7th grade.

I just think it was wild to actually have wearing an athletic supporter as a requirement, especially the school that mandated white gym shorts, wondering how many kids did not wear white jocks under them.

The list(s) requiring cups is understandable, that they didn't want liability in case someone got hurt.

it's a good chat room subject, asking if anyone remembers their class supply list, or underwent jocks inspections, etc.
Yes, parochial schools listed their requirements for a Jockstrap for boys’ PE as mandatory.
There was a DAILY jock check by the coach. You left the main locker area in only your T-shirt & jockstrap while carrying your gym shorts, socks & tennis shoes walking through the coach’s hallway so he could physically see you wearing your jock!!
Then you simply proceeded to another room with benches where you pulled on your shorts, socks, and shoes then went outside to the workout field for calisthenics for starters.
If you forgot your jock at home, you had to walk by his office hall in line still with all the other boys, but you only had on your T-shirt that was it!
You were then pulled into his office and had to stay there the whole session, bare-ass naked but your T, doing your calisthenics in front of him. He made you do many more, jumping jacks and running in place with high leg lifts and anything to really jog your testicles hoping they’d eventually hurt so you’d never forget your jock again. I only forgot my jockstrap once and pulled a hard-on about half way through the jumping jacks so my bone and balls were bouncing around something wicked - my stiff cock slapping my boy abs with each jump up….. there’s a lot more to tell but basically That’s how I lost my virginity at least orally..
After that one time forgetting, I generally forgot at least once every other week on purpose!
