I got my first athletic supporter in high school for mandatory freshman year PE. It was a Champion Atlas like the one below. It was furnished by the school along with gym shorts. I started wearing a jock when I was 12 for PE in 7th grade, jocks were mandatory back then. I wore it all the next summer too, finally wearing out both the pouch (severely cum stained) and straps which forced me to use some of my allowance money to buy a new one at a downtown sports store. I don't understand the logic behind having 2nd grade guys wear jocks other than being an athlete, you must wear a jock. Believe me, in the second grade when all you know of is briefs, many of us had the jocks on backwards and didn't understand what these things were--some were even put on sideways trying to figure out how to cover the front AND back! I remember the wrestling coach showing us a picture from a box on how you were to wear them. The jocks were not issues by the school since the school was poor in a rural area.

When PE started in the 4th grade, I remember my mother buying 4 Bike youth large jocks for me and one cup/jock combo from the list of local stores that the school provided a list of. Again, the guys who had not participated in the extracurricular sports had no idea how to wear the jocks. The teacher did have jocks and miscellaneous items in the lost and found/used bins.

Since this was in the early/mid 80's every single guy wore a jock for any athletic class or event. The coaches wore their coaches shorts with jocks and we all showered together. Since it was a poor and rural area most of the teachers were also your coaches so at one time or another we had all seen each other naked, walking around in jocks and underwear and definitely had all showered together many times.

I can't even remember how many jocks I must have gone through in high school, but I know I usually had 5-7 at any given time. Not knowing any better, I now realize I started wearing jocks much earlier than most. I had no idea that PE/jocks/showers usually started in the 7th grade for most.

For Little league I needed a cup. But it was not until JR 6th grade that jockstraps were required. That was 1981 and once I hit HS and sports all the time, I just had straps as underwear. Most of us jocks did not have to take off the jockey shorts to put on a strap. But we did put a clean jockstrap after our PE shower. We had to change later for wrestling, football or baseball. Yep, I taught the guys to double strap when cups were involved.
