Jockstrap Hazing (protecting the future assets of college fraternities)

In an era which ended decades ago, many fraternities required their pledges to spend long hours, if not days in tight jockstraps, simply to assure they remained uncomfortable. It was not unusual for fraternities to require pledges to wear a "pledge uniform" while in the fraternity house. While some fraternities required pledges to be attired in designated color blazers, shirts and ties, many others prescribed something more akin to a PE uniform, with white t-shirts and gym shorts stenciled PLEDGE in big black letters, often accompanied with the fraternity Greek letters.

It was what was required worn under the shorts that probably evokes some interest to members of this website. Some fraternities required that jocks and CUPS be worn at at all times while in pledge uniform. While it was claimed that the purpose of requiring cups be worn was to "protect the future assets of the fraternity" during pledge "athletics" and other activities, the main reason was that the old flat triangular cups in that era were always uncomfortable, and this was simply a harmless hazing technique to assure that pledges stayed miserable.

I'll qualify my comments that I am not relating a personal experience, as my fraternity was not a "jock house". Nevertheless I do recall seeing pledges from other fraternities entering and leaving the PE locker room wearing jocks often displaying the fraternity shield and cups firmly snapped into the jock pockets. Sometimes they were prohibited from showering after a vigorous freshmen PE physical training class session.

One of the larger fraternities on campus required their pledges to carry a large black marble inside the cup to remind them that they could be "blackballed" at any time, by any active, for any reason, or no reason at all. They were nicknamed in Greektown as "Three Ballers".

Fast forward about a decade, after I quit teaching and coaching and was driving the highways and byways selling "stuff" to institutional and wholesale markets.
I could always rely on an order from a "Trophy/Jewelry" store in a college town which carried mainly Greek stuff, i.e. paddles and mugs adorned with fraternity and sorority regalia. The merchant did not sell sporting goods other than some fraternity logo gym shorts and sweat pants. Regardless, in mid-summer I could always count on his order of about 10 dozen Bike Cup Supporter Units (jocks and cups), and a similar number of white Yale gym shorts. I am aware that the garments were then labeled, and no doubt sold to pledges at high prices no doubt splitting the profits between the store and the frat beer funds. The quantity ordered suggested that three or even four different campus fraternities insisted on keeping their pledges "protected"

The original posting sounds like my pledging experience
Would be interested if you could elaborate on how jockstraps were part of your fraternity pledge experience. Over the years I have picked up bits and pieces of the jock requirment being an important part of "pledge training", mostly from a hazing perspective. I think the mandatory black marble in the cup was unique to one fraternity, but snug jockstraps were the common pledge underwear "fashion de jour" of the era.

One memorable story I recall reading was a fraternity which required their pledges to carry their "pledge kit" inside their jock when in house uniform. They had to carry their nickels (2 nickels to give to actives to use in the house pay phone), a wrapped rubber (never could tell when an active suddenly found need), and a match book inside their cup. Pledges were required to immediately light the actives cigarettes. Unfortunately, the match books were typically soggy from cup sweat and would not light resulting in an immediate reward of 20 or 25 push-ups, plus a demerit written into the pledges gig book which was carried in rear jock waistband.

Hazing in that era could certainly be a "pain in the butt" particularly when the pledge paddle was used to cleanse off demerits, but compared to
some of the horrific alcohol related hazing incidents we currently read about, it was simply good clean fun.

With profound disappointment I've found that my hours of effort put into saving messages from the now defunct Yahoo Groups was in vain. Somehow I saved now non-working "links", rather than text downloads to dozens of messages which caught my interest. I'll try to share a couple of jock/hazing stories from memory but my recital certainly lacks the credibility and ambiance of the original poster:

This fraternity had their pledges reside in the fraternity house where like in many frats they were tasked with providing labor such has cleaning the house, washing the dishes, washing cars of members in addition to the usual pledge requirements of memorizing the Greek alphabet, and knowing every detail of their pledge manual. And like most frats, the pledges endured weekly mid-night "line-ups" typically resulting in calisthenics or a spirited run through campus while wearing designated attire, or lack thereof.

I don't recall if these pledges wore specific house pledge uniforms, but the writer emphasized that all pledges were required to keep their man parts packed in the "safety" of their jock and cup at all times.

Sunday night was movie night in the frat house. Like many fraternities, the chapter had a large collection of what was then 8 mm hard core porno movies, and it was expected that each pledge class would add more to the archives. Dozens of chapter members would assemble in the chapter room, with a beer keg tapped offering vocal approval of the excitement on the movie screen. To show their appreciation for the labors of their pledges, they invited the pledge class to share with the cinema fun. The enjoyment of the pledges was somewhat curtailed because they had to stand at attention, hoping that their dicks would somehow remain "at ease" still contained in their jock cups.

Designated pledges were tasked with lighting the cigars of the actives and keeping their beer tankards full, but pledges were prohibited from drinking alcohol in the frat house (wow, hasn't that changed). Meanwhile the actives typically attired in sweat pants would periodically leave for the bath room to relieve themselves from the beer and "other fluids", creating an unpleasant clean-up task later for the pledges.

What caught my attention reading the story was that although this was a "straight" fraternity and nearly all of the movies depicted male/female sex, they would periodically put a gay flick into the mix. One depicted four or five apparent fraternity pledges on their knees providing oral service to the cocks of frat members. When this flick was shown, the members of the fraternity would cease their constant hoots and hollers and almost in unison shout "Hell Week, Hell Week". My gut feeling was that probably no gay sex was performed during hell week, but it must have certainly mind f*cked the pledges who were privileged to watch the show.

Yea, guys this was the pledging experience in the 50's and 60's. Not exactly gay sex, not entirely jockstrap focused, but keep in mind that unlike today, it was almost unheard of for fraternity pledges to die from alcohol or drug overdoses.

My fraternity did not make us wear jocks during pledging and I must have been in a different time period then you because I've never heard of this before --- but I wore mine all the time. One day one of my fraternity brothers was back from baseball practice and I knew he had his on. Let's just say he doesn't have that jock anymore. <<evil grin>>
