Initial washing of a vintage supporter

I have recently purchased several old jockstraps. They are going into my daily rotation and I want to wash them before I begin to season and form them to my body. Any opinions are accepted.

I'm assuming that they've been worn before, is why you want to wash them. I wash mine by hand, never in the washing machine, as it can ruin them. To make it more fun, I wear them into the shower when I want to wash them, and wash them while on my body before taking them off for a final wash and rinse. Then I hang them to air dry.

I would agree with Jimmy that if your jocks are old enough to have rubber thread weave, such as the BIKE #10, you should probably hand wash in cold water. You can use Woolite, but any detergent will work if used in moderation. Dawn will work just fine. Soak if necessary, and soak rinse. Never, ever use a dryer. Hang to drip and dry.

I am looking for a link describing the way the Army washed jockstraps in their remedial physical training platoon at Ft. Leonard Wood. (Vietnam War era). It previously was in Yahoo Groups, but I think I've seen it elsewhere. Recruits wore PT uniforms and jockstraps all day, then they were laundered each evening in a washing machine in their barracks. Shorts, socks and shirts were washed and dried in regular laundry, but jocks were machine washed in cold water and spun at slow speed. Then the poor schlep assigned to night time laundry detail towel wicked each jock. They were then hung on the bedposts to dry until the following evening. As I recall, shorts ahd shirts were numbered for recruit identity, but socks were shared. I don't know about jocks. A barracks decorated in drying jockstraps must have been quite a sight!

I wash new jocks by hand in cool water with very little soap, rinse well, wring gently by hand and air dry. They never get washed after that. I don't recall ever washing genuine vintage jocks at all. Can't remember. It's been a ages since I bought one.

That's what I was getting at. I only want to wash the sizing and mustiness out before I start to add my sweat to them. And yes, I will only wash them the once and never again.

When I wash my jockstraps I put them in garment bags and I have found some which have an very open weave. I can get 5 to 6 in each back and I do put them in the washer on warm and I do not tumble dry but instead let them air dry. I live in a condo that has a common laundry room and this way I can easily take them out of the load. Also since they put in agitator machines again it helps to preserve them since the agitator tends to attack the leg straps. Sure they do eventually wear out but I think I have enough stockpiled that they will last me a while.

When I went through USMC Recruit Training at Parris Island we did a similar routine. P. T. gear was washed at night. Shirts together, shorts together, socks etc... Everything was run through the dryer except jocks. They were laid out to dry on our footlockers overnight. This was back in 1982.

Most are new old stock and smell musty from years of storage. I want a nice clean and fresh jock to begin my shaping of my new support garment. I wouldn't wash someone's musty odor out of a jock. That's most of the fun of a used jock.
I bought some of the WW2 Army jocks that had been in storage. I got them for memory sake because they were basically the same thing the military issued me 30 years later. They were made to give snug support for the average man, and the well hung guy had a real struggle because they couldn't get everything in them.

The old WW2 manufacture that I ordered on eBay had sizing put in them. It's some kind of starch to stiffen them and give you extra support for the first wear. The starch got musky and smells bad with age.

The starch makes the jock very stiff. At first I thought, "The waist is too small for me." But it is really the right size. It will not stretch only because of the starch. And you can tear it trying to put it on if it is too small for you. So I wash the starch out BEFORE I ever put it on. Then the jock that was too tight relaxes and it will fit well.

It may take more than a few washings for the smell to go away, but it will. Those jocks are almost 80 years old but the elastic is still good. I think that elastic dies if it has soaps or laundry chemicals left in it.

You can see from the photo how snug they are. Fantastic ball support. I am only slightly larger than average and I can barely keep my noodled-up cock in the waistband.

CORRECTION: NO on Woolite. I believe I read that it is gentle on wool but it's chemistry destroys elastic.

BOOT CAMP: We were given two jockstraps and two pairs of loose boxer shorts. No briefs. Briefs would have become a soggy mess in 110F in Texas (or Vietnam). You needed to breathe.

We were required to wear jockstraps about half the time. Some guys were changing back and forth between jocks and boxers. Many of us just wore our jockstraps all the time. I have a big sensitive circumcised dickhead. I could not bear to have it hanging down and getting rubbed raw in boxers. So my jockstrap was my constant best friend.

We were instructed to wear our jocks into the showers every night and wash them while we showered. Then we were instructed to hang them to dry on our bed posts overnight. Yes, the barracks were a beautiful sight! My bunk mate's jock was very close to my face. Yes, our jocks were stamped with our number. We were given two jocks. The one we weren't wearing could be put into the laundry where it was washed with soap. We got our own back. This one guy often volunteered for laundry detail. I always wondered if he stuck his face in the jockstraps.

We were also told that it was perfectly normal to jack off. We could not get in trouble for doing it. It's not sex perversion; it's a biological need. There was no privacy. There we no stalls on the toilets nor showers. It was suggested that the showers was the best place to jack-off. But no one in our squadron was confident enough to do it with 50 guys watching and pairing up under the showerheads. I heard that in some other squadrons everyone did. I probably should have started it, but was shy about being the first one. I did let all the guys see me when I had a boner. There's nothing to be ashamed of there!

It was fantastic bonding with 50 brothers, seeing each other naked and putting on jockstraps all day long. It really lets you know your a man. For guys who experienced that, there can be a tendency to want to hold on to those experiences. This is not gay. It's just being a man.
