Same here. I was given a bike swimmer jockstrap the summer before 6th grade. My dad always wears his swim jock under his suit for swimming. He wears a 3inch jock when not at the pool or beach. His father did too as do his brothers. I then got a 3inch waistband bike for 6th-grade gym glass. We both still strap up today. It was a blast to see three generations of men strapping at the beach.

I did not come across jockstraps at school in England - we did not need them for gym - unless you were on the rugby team or cricket, you just didn't see them.

As a teen I become a bit obsessed with underwear as it was one of the only ways you could see men without many clothes on was in the underwear pages of a clothing catalogue.

When I left home to go to university in the late 80's I bought my first jockstrap from a sports store in person. I pretended it was for working out but it was really for jerking off. I also bought lots of different styles of underwear - the more jock-like the better. I could not really admit to any boyfriends or hook-ups that I really wanted to have sex wearing it - it seemed too kinky at that time/that age.

In the 70's there were still a lot of elementary schools which required jocks for boys as young as 8 years old.
This newspaper clip showed jocks required for 4th graders which would have been about 9 years old.
When BIKE introduced their YM series of boys jockstraps they sent out a lot of promotional info and coop advertising
money indicating jocks we appropriate for 3rd grade PE classes (8 year old boys). I suspect the reason for 8 year old boys to wear jocks in PE was more for hygiene purposes than for anatomical necessity for support. Regardless, I have hundreds of back to school advertisements making it clear that PE class meant jockstrap time, regardless of age. I'll post more if any interest.

I recognized this paragraph right away as I was one of the kids in the plain maroon shorts in 5th grade. My first jock came from Levin's menswear in Marengo, IL It was a Bauer and Black swim jock with a diving coin glued to the box. They were out of regular jocks by the time we got there. I have been on the lookout for a pic of the diving coin on the net for a long time but have never found one. I didn't go to the city schools but was at a rural school that still exists today, District 18 Riley- Marengo Consolidated Community School District. As I recall he had a small store, in the middle of a downtown business block but he certainly sold a lot of shoes, shorts socks and jocks. I wonder if Levin's is still in business? Hang in there, you have some pretty good vintage content on there. Hopefully guys in our era will find it. The google listing for Levin's now says closed but there is some internet activity up to a few years ago. The store opened in 1922. He sold a lot of jocks and PE uniforms because he was the only menswear store in about a 15 mile radius which covered several small country schools and high schools. This was the height of the jock era in the late 60's/early 70's.
