I am obviously showing my age and generation when I answer and say that our Lacrosse coaches taught us to first wear a regular pouch jockstrap (Bike # 10, of course!), then slide on what we called "gray sanitary shorts" - a thin material similar to today's boxer briefs - over the regular jock.
Then, we would pull a cup-jock (Bike #53 with the pale yellow cup and blue rubber trim) over the sani's. Finally, we would don our uniform shorts.
As it was explained, the regular pouch jockstrap was worn to prevent scrotal fatigue while running up and down the field, while the cup-jock was worn to minimize damage from the impact of a Lacrosse stick or ball.
I agree with many of the writers that the compression short with cup is not as effective, particularly when the compression short has been washed too many times and loses its hold; then the cup wanders around at the most inopportune times.
As for the MX writers, I empathize with your search for the correct fit of the cup to compensate for how you are seated. Most cups today have been designed to deflect the impact from an in-bound projectile, whereas the MX cup should be designed to minimize impact caused by the rider hitting the seat. I wonder if the older models of cups (if found), which are "flatter" in design, would be better and safer fit for MX? Thoughts?

I'm gobsmacked to see pic after pic of «professional athletes» (and others) wearing a cup over those ball-destroying «compression shorts». If the «goods» aren't contained securely INSIDE the cup then its protective role is severely compromized. As jocksnsocks200 has correctly noted, the SAFE and SECURE way to wear a cup is to FIRST ensure that your jewels are snugly and securely cradled in a wel-fitting pouch which is not going to shift or drop everytrhing out at an inopportune moment. (Probably why you see so much «adjustment» going on out on the field). The CUP, then can fit securely over that secured package, and if its «carrier» is properly designed it will stay securely in place during the most extremet stretching, bouncing, and most important of all IMPACT. I guess the «Sanitary Shorts» were an attempt at reducing sweating and chafing although I never sae those in my days in the locker room. Compression Shorts are the product of sadists hoping to destroy as many sets of balls as possible. Ayyyyy-men!

JOCKWOOF (on alt.support.jockstrap and elsewhere) has been a rider for years and has often recommended his favourite cups for that purpose.

Always inside the cup pouch of the jock. I prefer snap-type pouches. I have three cup jocks. A vintage Flarico no. 42, a vintage Defender and a vintage JOFA. If I'm wearing my JOFA cup, I also wear a well-seasoned jockstrap underneath. After a few hours, the jock gets super sweaty and smells awesome. The JOFA also fits nicely over the face.
I’ve been breaking my cup in more the last few days since I’m going back to work Friday. I work armed security. I got a bulletproof cup. That shit was expensive, it was the best cup I’ve bought.

I wasn't even aware bulletproof cups exist. But sure, everything to keep family jewels safe.

I didn’t realize there were so many different ways to wear a jock and cup until I started thinking about doing this poll. Presumably clothing or other gear would be worn on top of these options, but I guess it depends on what kind of activity you're doing ;) Perhaps the answer depends on the sport? Let us know!

The option "Between compression shorts and a jockstrap" seemed a bit strange to me, but one time I heard that's "how the pros do it."

Also, is hockey the only sport with its own kind of cup protective gear?

Photo evidence encouraged to verify poll results.
Gobsmacked at the results... «like the pros do» especially. Never mind the COMFORT, just for safety's sake there's only ONE WAY to properly be cupped: 1. VERY snug jock; 2. properly-fitted cupjock OVER, PERIOD. All the rest is window dressing or «just for fun». Hockey Goalies (which I was once one) need much more «armour» down there as between 100mph pucks, skate blades and entire hulking bodies, what can assault your «nether regions» while down on the ice can be nothing short of frightening. I preferred «double cupping — jock, OBC XL cup, topped by any of the typical «goalie cups» all carefully taped to ensure they didn't stray from their «appointed post». Took a few horrendous shots with no permanent damage even a PUCK up the leg of my pants! NOT that I haven't had all sorts of fantasy «cup fun» even drinking victory champaigne from the team captain's «unventilated» Cooper cup. Then there's all the BEDROOM fun to be had with cups....but I digress.....

I wear a protective athletic cup inside the jockstrap cup pouch. My two vintage cup jocks - a Flarico No. 42 and a Defender - have the two-snap closures. I have two vintage hard cups, a gray Bike 80 and an Original Banana Cup (OBC). When wearing a JOFA hockey cup, however, I like to wear a regular athletic supporter underneath it, usually a well-seasoned one.

I liked the Defender cups/jocks. The cup fit perfect, and the jock held it place. I wish they still made them.

One of my great erotic fantasies is milking DRY all my favourite sweat-drenched team members' dleicious bags and heads starting with the hard, hunggg defenseman who never seemed to be able to keep his gorgeous skinhead dick from popping to rigid attention the minute it exited his cup. Then the Team Captain's magnificent «halfway to his knees» huge smooth jizzz-swollen plums. Makes me wonder what «action» takes place in GAY hockey teams.... a phenomenon which arrived too late for me to explore in depth — ahem!
