"Esquire" magazine, October 1974, "A Short History of the Jockstrap" by James Villas (internet)

Some of us will recall this article from "Esquire" magazine. It was included in the "Super Sports" edition for 1974. The author, James Villas, wrote a remarkable article, starting on p. 235 of the magazine (116 of 206 on the internet post), and jumping to p. 380 (196 of 206). I was finally able to locate the uploaded magazine, and am sharing the public link here:

The photographs throughout this magazine are very interesting - did we actually wear those styles of clothing?! There is an article with the interesting title of "Blowjob on a Rattlesnake", many ads for alcohol, and even an ad for "Cruex" saying that "Jock itch shouldn't be treated lightly." Of course, there are some interesting photographs of athletes and athletic gear from that period.

I hope that you will find the "History" to be of interest, and perhaps bring back some personal memories.

If it is not too late for me to confess, those pages were torn out of a copy of the magazine at the barbershop on Saturday morning, and carefully folded into the pocket of yes, my bell-bottom plaid trousers.
