BIKE Pro 10 advertisement from the 1960s - support for all sports

I am certain that many of you have seen this advertisement, and perhaps like me, quietly removed the printed page from "Athletic Journal" or other publications when this appeared.

BIKE introduced the plush Pro 10, and prepared this advertisement showing a naked (and All-American looking) athlete. He is holding various pieces of sports equipment to illustrate that the BIKE jockstrap may be worn - indeed back then, should be worn - to participate in these and other sports and activities.

It is improbable that such an advertisement would be published today, but at least during my young days, it was possible and quite acceptable. After all, the first thing on and the last thing off for most athletes back then was a jockstrap.

I hope that some of you will remember this advertisement, and that it will bring back good memories.

Anyone notice he doesn't have a jockstrap on, just buck naked. Didn't see that much back when this was printed.

The two main differences that I see between this and the Bike No. 10s that I wore in high school are the waistband and color. The waistband of the Pro No. 10 is very different from the “regular” No.10 of that period. If you look at the picture carefully and compare to a No. 10 from the 70’s you can easily see the difference. As the original poster described it, the waistband is “plush”. The pouches on both look identical to me. The color of the the Pro No. 10 is bright white, I suppose it is bleached cotton. The 70’s era No.10s were off-white, sort of cream colored. The ones I wore in HS had red tracer stripes, vs the red/blue/red on the Pro version pictured above. I found one description that reads:

Bike Pro 10 made for the professional athlete. The waistband, pouch and legstraps are much heavier than the regular Bike No. 10 of the period.

In the end, I think you probably nailed it. It may have been mostly about marketing variety. Kind of like toothpaste
