Best washing practice?

Looking for some advice regarding washing and care for your jocks. I recently recovered from a mild staph infection in my groin which resulted in multiple boils appearing over a period of a few weeks. Thankfully I’m all healed now, but I’ve noticed a single boil develop once or twice since then (always on the right side of my groin) and it’s usually after a few days after wearing my 2” Bike jock.

These are always washed with my gym kit (wear them in the gym most often) and are washed with Halo Proactive, as are my other branded jocks. I’m beginning to think it’s either not being cleaned properly, I’m developing a reaction to bike in particular, or maybe I should just throw them out (approx 5 years old). None of my other brands are causing a reaction as far as I can tell. I’m generally hygienic as I’m wary that this could be a cause, but I’m keen to see if anyone has any ideas?

Since first wearing a jockstrap as a teenager, I’ve developed a habit (suggested by my Dad) of wearing my jockstrap into the gym shower after a workout, then soaping and rinsing it while showering. I also use the soaped jock as a washcloth/exfoliant all over the body. After
It’s rinsed I let it fully air dry at home on a clothes hanger. This process not only facilitates the shower routine, but preserves the jockstraps which don’t normally survive multiple cycles of the automatic washer and dryer.

My first thought is that you may have developed a bit of an allergy to rubber as Bike pouches have a bit of rubber in their webbing used in the pouch. I know some people are allergic to Latex so perhaps it's similar. Just a hunch.

If you're not getting the reaction while wearing other jocks/gear then it sounds like something specific to the Bike jock and not your detergent.

Sorry to hear of you preDICKament. My suggestion would be to put the jock out in full sun all day. Bring it in at night and hang it on a door knob instead of putting it in a drawer. Keep in the open air. Maybe toss it in the dryer for 15 minutes or so. Repeat for a few days. The UV rays of the sun and the heat of the dryer should kill any fungus, bacteria and/or viruses contained in the nut hammock. On the other hand, it might be easier to simply discard it and get a new one. I occasionally get jock itch from wearing the same raunchy jock 24/7 for too long. I do the aforementioned routine which has worked well so far. In the interim, I wear a clean jock or pair of tighty whities for a few days.

Of the guys I played football with in high school, most did the shower wash thing... Myself included.

The best part? When I guy hung is jock on the shower valve handle, then forgot to take it with him when he was done. You bet your strapped ass I checked some out, picked some up, swapped some out.

I still get a super boner just thinking about it.

Same thing would happen when I had PE in junior hi. I volunteered to clean up the locker room for extra credit and would always find a jock or two in the shower room plus some laying around on the floor in the changing area. Any items I found were supposed to go in the lost and found but I can honestly say that not all of the jocks I found ended up there, at least not right away.

I never wash mine
What’s the fun if you cannot smell your own man musks or your boyfriends
Totally agree the scent of male spunk, sweat, and a few drips of piss, give a jockstrap intense erotic appeal, giving said whiffer a more satifying ejaculation (thus firing his heavier jock load for the appreciation of another). Its a contageous “cycle of life!”

When I was a boy, I used to wash mine while showering. I'd use whatever bar soap I was using on my body. Never had a problem. I eventually started washing mine in the washer with my gym kit. Regular detergent.
Most of the time, I don't wash it. It's on me for an hour or two, and then it air dries. I wash it after maybe 10-15 wears.

Hand wash in the shower. I do not use a machine, for it will compromise the elasticity and other properties over time.

I like to wear mine into the shower, and use liquid soap to wash it while I'm wearing it, and then subseuqnetly to take it off and give it a final wash and rinse before hanging on a slotted hanger to drip dry on the shower rod (for the straps to rest in the slots).

Alternatively you could do what i do for my masks, and that is to use a clean Dunkin cup with a tad laundry detergent, add water, shake up, decant and do another rinse, soap free, and hang on a hanger to drip dry

Hi I can tell you after 53 years of wearing a jock first as a young boy dad taught me after a outing to the beach and salt water we washed our jocks out after one washing getting the sand out in the shower. The rinsed out jock hanging in shower as I soaped my body and genitalia. Drying my body off. Dressed after in clean fresh jock. The wet one was always hanging out on clothes line to dry or near a open window. Never never in a dryer. Some of fashion jocks have to be washed more in mild soap .

Sorry to hear you have had to deal with that. Those boils can be extremely painful and not something to ever take casually. The way you are washing your jock should be taking care of any issues with cleanliness. I do like a lot of guys mentioned and air dry my jocks to save the wear and tear of the dryer. I would suspect there is still some lingering staph in your system or as mentioned you might possibly have an allergic reaction. However if your boils are like those in the past it is unlikely it is continuation of staph. It can be stubborn. Be sure to take ALL medication a doc may give you. Quitting early can cause the infection to develop immunity to treatments. This doesn't seem normal that it is happening with one jock but just try taking that out of rotation for awhile and see what happens. Either way, if you get more of the boils you should be in contact with your doc. I know a couple of people that nearly died from staph that got out of control internally before they realized it. Be careful out there.

Might be worth trying one of the Bike-style jockstraps listed with spandex instead of latex to try and isolate any material sensitivity issues.

MRSA is no fun. Anecdotally, a family member had good luck controlling their outbreaks by supplementing with colloidal silver *I'm not a doctor.*

Taking care of older family members been dealing with ringworm fungus in particular and generally being paranoid about pinworm bedbugs scabies and any other possible and annoying hygeine complications. I am repeatedly alarmed reading that this or that cleanser is ineffective (like maybe for general maintenance but never specifically to sanitize) and that you're really just supposed to fry everything at high temps, which is lousy for elastics.

I had high hopes for ammonia, for oxiclean, but no. Teatree oil I would expect to do well and is appealing as I generally use it around the house and the scent doesn't make me cough and gag like most laundry stuff, but you'd have to futz with a lack of documentation on efficacy and concentrations, and possible/probable degradation of elastic and plastics. Plus I have been advised it is bad for appliances for both gasket solvent reasons as well as volatile flammability issues. Pretreating sounds plausible but hand laundry facilities are often lacking, and if I were into pretreating I might own clothing in colors besides black.

I think i'll be ordering in an oxygen cleaner or detergent blend that specifically has an activator. Available in powder only, seems to require presence of oxygen bleach as well as high temps but I'm not specifically seeing all the temperature documentation I'm looking for. The activator ingredients are Tetraacetylethylenediamine (TAED) or sodium nonanoyloxybenzenesulfonate (NOBS), which at temp and with oxygen bleach create the necessary chemistry, peracetic acid and pernonanoic acid respectively. I'm leaning towards Oxiclean Sanitize specifically but need to shop around.

Being low-income and also valuing my expensive elastic socks and underwear (I'm especially mindful of my $100 christmas gifted Smartwool long johns I need to not get frostbite, among other bicycling gear) I'm reluctant to admit that some garments are supposed to be temporary. A new jockstrap before every game from the equipment manager I guess. Turnover wouldn't be so bad if good products weren't discontinued, mass production cost benefits weren't wildly diluted with inferior products, or if the products were natural or rayon fiber and biodegradeable.

A bike-style knit mesh jockstrap in cotton/ hemp/ rayon/ tencel/ modal/ latex fibers would be great for carbon, agricultural considerations, biodegradeability, microplastic pollution, flammability, as well as comfort and horniness reasons. I would buy in bulk if the fit were right. black, olive green, unbleached hemp off-white, maybe a super subtle botanical print on the waistband. Just a suggestion.

Also looking forward to fully bio-based spandex replacements coming online, I really do rely on spandex for jeans and trousers to be remotely tolerable. Maybe I'll take up sewing and just pleat everything to death so they can fit my fat gut and I can squat down without first stripping my pants off while I'm busy sloshing all my clothes in boiling water.

Maybe that's why Mad Max post-apocalypse scavengers only wear chainmail and leather jockstraps. Great range of motion and easier to repeatedly steam sanitize to keep at bay all the superbugs bred by ambient body-temp climate and sloppy antibiotics policy. God knows where you can source decent non-nano-particle lead-free zinc oxide sunscreen as civilization collapses into a scorched earth, don't want your butt cheeks scorched as well!

I use my like a washcloth and then I work 15 or 20 times it really doesn't smell that bad and usually if I get any comments to positive. I also like keeping my bush as smooth as possible that way when I wear my Speedos and Speedos that sometimes slip down you can't really see anything which is nice
