Jockstrap Fan
it's almost august. and to me, august is jockstraps. and sweat and testosterone, and open showers.
august is traditionally when american football practice begins. i was not an exceptional athlete, but i was on the team and i practiced with everyone else. in early august before two-a-day practices began, the equipment was handed out. and the jockstraps were new and clean.
i remember that at the end of each practice "jocks and socks" were thrown on the floor in the middle of the locker room to be gathered in mass and washed together. They were then hung in individual lockers to dry. there were no names written on the jocks, it was share and share alike, randomly assigned by the equipment manager after each washing. after the first week those jocks were no longer pristine and white, but as i said - share and share alike. simplicity at it's finest.
that locker room was my first exposure to jockstraps. you wanted to be one of the guys, so you wore one. parading around to get taped up, or just standing up having a loud conversations wearing only a jock. you joined the group in the open showers as everyone playfully sized up everyone else. and you soaked in the unforgettable smell of sweat and testosterone. you were a man, in a crowded locker room of naked men.
