A Poppy for your thoughts - Armistice/Veterans Day 2021

jocksnsocks2002

Jocksnsocks2002
At the eleventh hour
of the eleventh day
of the eleventh month ...

The war which was intended to end all wars was brought to an armistice - a laying down of weapons, and as history has shown, only a temporary cessation in hostilities - and yet to this day, women and men across the globe continue to answer the call to duty and to service on behalf of their fellow citizens.

We respectfully wear poppies, in recollection of the row on row in Flanders Field, and we solemnly gather in our respective houses of worship and in front of our respected cenotaphs, ever mindful of unmarked graves and to the remains "known only to God" around the world.

How many of the men who have served were issued an athletic supporter, during basic training and for the terrifying drop in a parachute? How many did not survive, and not only died "with their boots on" but strapped in a jock? How many of us, who have served and who salute our fellow veterans, likewise have run our courses and the gamut of obstacles, clad first in a jockstrap and then in the protective gear and kit of our respective branches of services? How many school students have been instructed in physical education by men who have been physically educated through combat, and who have stressed the importance of being properly fitted out?

Our prayers are for those who have fallen, and our prayers remain with the loved ones of those who have not returned. We salute the valour of those who have served and commend those who, at this very time, are responding to the Call. Please know that you are loved, you are admired, you are commended, and you are supported.

As the poppies, mingled with our tears, fall today -

We shall remember.

I have recently found the British series "Wartime Farm" on Tubi. Being in the U.S., two generations from WWII, I was really never a student of the war and the effects it had on Western Europe and Great Britain. I have learned so much in the last two weeks from this series. There were stories and pictures I have never seen or heard before. The biggest impression it made on me was the sacrifices the people made just to keep everyone going. Fathers, Sons, Brothers all off to war and families not knowing what happened to them for years. The extra effort made by everyone to keep food on the table, clothes on your loved ones, and a safe place to sleep was dramatic. They all pulled together for a common cause. There is something to be learned from this in our modern age as well. So I agree with the thoughts above. The veterans deserve so much more respect than what some are getting. Great post jocksnsocks2002!

Dear Bike57,

Your heart-sprung words are a far greater testimony in honour of the valiant men and women, both in military service and in service on the home front. Every generation, including today's, needs the love and support which you have identified in your most appreciated letter. Thank you for your service and dedication.
